Plainfield is a city in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 10,869 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 and named after PlainFIELD, England. The original town plat was created on December 1, 1847 with a population of only four people. In 1850, the town had 30 residents and by 1860 it had 100 residents. In 1870 the population had increased to 300 and by 1880 it reached 500. The increase in population came about because of two factors: first, industrial development in the area began to increase; second, there were many new schools built throughout Hancock County as result of an agricultural boom that started during the early 1800s. In 1907 Plainfield became one of ten municipalities within the newly formed Metropolitan Indianapolis District (MID). As part of this change Plainfield lost its independent status but continued to be governed by its own board of trustees until 1951 when it became part of the new Marion County government under then-Governor JF Kennedy. The economy of Plainfield has been based largely on agriculture since before permanent settler populations arrived in what is now Hancock County. Fields have included corn, wheat, soybeans and other crops for centuries; however production peaked during World War II with demand from abroad resulting in increased production costs which led to decline over time. However recent advances in technology have allowed for greater efficiency and today's farmers are still able to produce high quality goods at lower costs than ever before This has resulted in a revival of local businesses including several large grocery stores as well as small businesses catering specifically to local needs such as plumbing services and ceramic tile installation

Plainfield, Indiana was founded in 1825 by James Monroe and his family. The city is named after the Monrovia Purchase, which included land that would later become Plainfield. The town's first residents were farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, wheat, and other crops. A mill was built in 1829 and soon began to produce flour for local markets. In 1835, the town voted to incorporation as a village. In 1840, the town voted to annex neighboring Blackford Township. By 1860, the population of Plainfield had reached 10,000 people and it became an important agricultural center with mills capable of producing large quantities of flour and other goods. The Panic of 1893 led to a decline in business activity in Plainfield. However, the city continued to grow as a result of its location on the natural gas route between Chicago and Indianapolis. In 1907, Plainfield became one of six communities in Indiana designated as experimental townships due to their potential for economic development. This designation allowed for more rapid growth within the township without undergoing annexation by larger municipalities like Bloomington or South Bend. In 1915-16, Plainfield experienced its largest peacetime population increase when it welcomed 15% of all soldiers fighting in World War I along with their families (the war brought about a rash of new incorporations). After the war ended in 1918-19, many workers returned home while others moved into cities such as Minneapolis or Detroit because of wage scales that were much higher than what they had been earning during wartime campaigns overseas (these changes led to a significant decrease in manufacturing jobs). Although many small businesses closed during this time period due to lack of competition from larger companies located elsewhere on Lake Michigan), some major employers such as Jardine Meat Packers survived thanks to their close proximity to railroad yards and other major commercial areas throughout downtown Plainfield. During World War II (1939-45), factories were constructed nearby including one that produced tanks for America’s allies (the plant produced over 1 million vehicles). With so much production happening at once outside of downtownplainfield however there was little jobs available for locals once hostilities ceased; most residents commute into nearby cities where jobs were available if they could find them (.46 miles roundtrip compared with .68 miles trip into downtown plainFIELD)due largely to high unemployment rates during wartime times
The Plainfield community was founded in 1847 by a group of farmers who left the nearby city of Terre Haute, Indiana to create a new town. The original settlers were Methodist Episcopalians and they named their town Plainfield after the surrounding plain terrain. In 1868, the United States Post Office was established in Plainfield, and it remained an important part of the community until it was discontinued in 1971.
