Plainfield is a town in and the county seat of Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,614 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to what is now Plainfield were men from Danville, Illinois, who arrived in 1824. In 1830, John Denny and his brother James founded the town on a tract of land that had been granted by President Andrew Johnson. The village of Plainfield was chartered in 1836 and became the permanent municipal center for Harrison County when other settlements within the county were consolidated. The first store in Plainfield was built on Main Street in 1840 by J.F. Goodrich and continued to be operated until 1909 when it closed because of heavy competition from larger stores opening up throughout Harrison County. Plainfield has undergone several name changes since its earliest days as a small town: "Danville", "Harrisonburg", "Wabash Heights", "Lake Pleasant". In 1884, following approval by the state legislature, PlainFIELD was renamed to honor General George Washington Custis (1775-1837), son of Colonel Robert Eling Custis (1754-1827). The city of Indianapolis annexed Plainfield in 1907 after it became apparent that annexation would not stop local growth within Harrison County despite efforts by officials at both levels to prevent it. In 1925, after years of consolidation among various villages within Harrison County due to increasing population densities caused by agricultural production along DeKalb Avenue north of Interstate 65 and development around Uptown Lakefront shopping district west of I-65 culminating with plans for an expressway through plainfield which never came to fruition; all but two villages within Harrison County were absorbed into Indianapolis when it incorporated as a municipality with its own government under Mayor Tom Bradley effective December 3rd 1930; this left PlainFIELD as an unincorporated community with no official governing body save for occasional flag raising ceremonies conducted annually by village residents or their descendants at Village Hall on Saturday evenings beginning May 1st following Thanksgiving weekend during which time attendance typically averaged about 70% due largely to regular participation organized social events sponsored by various organizations connected with downtown Indianapolis including grain elevator operators' associations theretofore unheard Of Events thereby limiting opportunities for gambling/alcohol abuse/unlawful assembly etc.; although flag raising ceremonies have been discontinued since then they are still occasionally held at Village Hall between 5pm and 7pm each year without prior notice given generally one week before such date so as not to interfere with scheduled activities inside City Hall where often much more interestingDiscussion takes place

Plainfield is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Plainfield was James Herron who came to the area in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Wabash River. In 1837, John Hinkle founded a mill here and began to produce flour for local consumption and export. The Panic of 1893 destroyed these businesses and many others throughout Indiana, but Hinkle's mill continued to function until 1902. In 1864, Captain George Armstrong established what would become Armstrong General Store here as an independent business selling goods ranging from groceries to hardware. By 1870, it had grown into one of Indianapolis' largest grocery stores with a section devoted exclusively to horse feed and horseshoes. A post office called Plainfield was established in 1872; it changed its name to PlainFIELD in 1896 when it became part of Lafayette Township (later Hamilton Township). The township was organized on March 15, 1903; PlainFIELD was added to Hamilton Township on April 1 that same year. Plainfield has experienced growth over time: its population increased from 2,421 in 2000 to 2,531 at the 2010 census! This increase is largely due to migration: according to2010 US Census data*, about 60% of all residents are foreign-born (of any country). Additionally, Plainfield has seen an influx of new businesses in recent years: according to 2016Indiana Economic Development Authority figures*, there have been 4 new high-tech companies incorporated within 5 miles of Plainfield since 2015! These exciting developments continue apace even as our town struggles with some long-standing issues such as lack of affordable housing and blighted neighborhoods
In 1814, the first white settlers arrived in Plainfield. They were John and Rebecca Hammond, who had come from Maryland. The Hammons named their new town after themselves, but it was renamed Plainfield in 1836 after General Andrew Johnson's victory in the American Civil War. After the war, many more people moved to Plainfield and it became a thriving community with a growing economy. In 1907, PlainFIELD & Pierson Railroad was built and made Plainfield one of the most important cities in Indiana. The city grew quickly and by 1920 it had over 100,000 residents. It continued to grow until World War II when the city center was destroyed by a bombing raid.
