Plainfield is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the county seat of Vanderburgh County. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Indiana's “Palladium” metropolitan area and is home to Purdue University. The city was founded by farmers in 1837 as a small town on the banks of the Atchison River. A post office was established in 1839, and by 1840, Plainfield had a population of 507 residents. In 1847, it became an incorporated community with a government that included five trustees who were elected by property owners. In 1861, it was renamed after Prince George Washington's brother-in-law, James Kappesvelt; however, this name change did not last long because at least one resident objected to its similarity to Philadelphia (Kappesvelt had come from that city). The first railroad through Vanderburgh County arrived in 1864 and Plainfield became part of that railway town; however, it remained an unincorporated community for most of its history until 1959 when it merged with nearby Lafayette into what would become Lafayette/ Plainfield Township. In 1916, when Indianapolis annexed much of surrounding territory including Plainfield Township (and other adjacent townships), Plainfield became an official annexe within Indianapolis - making it one of only two cities in Indiana which have been both annexationed and made part of their larger municipality (the other being South Bend). In 1961–1962 there were large protests against desegregation plans across America led by civil rights leaders such as Drinnon Littlejohn and Medgar Evers; these protests eventually led to Indianapolis' decision not to integrate Central High School into the schools local jurisdiction but rather into central school districts statewide. This action effectively ended all efforts at integration within plainFIELD itself - though some students continued to attend integrated Central High until 1978 following passage of landmark education law known as "Bloomingdale Amendments" which granted anti-discrimination protection to public high schools statewide protections similar to those already enjoyed by private high schools (though not including places like Central High).

The population of Evansville decreased from its peak in 1930 to its current size as a result of commuter traffic to Indianapolis and other municipalities within Kane County. In 1964, the city of Plainfield merged with neighboring unincorporated communities to form a new municipality known as "PlainFIELD".
Plainfield was founded in 1814 by sir John Stephenson. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who fought in the War of 1812. The first store and post office were built in the town. In 1846, the Plainfield Township seat was moved from North Manchester to Plainfield. The tornado that struck Plainfield on May 5, 1865 killed 30 people and injured over 100. In 1971, the town became a part of Indiana's newly created Evansville metropolitan area.
