Plainfield is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 13,865 at the 2010 census. The city is home to the largest concentration of Hoosiers in Indiana. It is also home to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, one of the world's leading tire companies. Plainfield was founded by Danish immigrants in 1814 as a farming village on the east side of what is now Monroe County. In 1851, when Indianapolis became a city, Plainfield annexed part of neighboring town of Monterey. In 1898, Plainfield voters passed an ordinance making it a prohibition-era "dry" town which forbadekemployment within its borders without a liquor license from another local business or individual. In 1924, Plainfield voters approved incorporation as a city and named it after George Washington Carver who had donated land for the city's growth. The first mayor was Wm Hargrave and the first City Council was elected by popular vote on November 3rd 1925 with Wm Hargrave as Mayor and Geo Fenton as Vice Mayor. On December 4th 1925 (the day after Christmas), Mayor Hargrave presented his credentials to President Calvin Coolidge while Vice Mayor Fenton delivered an address extolling temperance principles which would guide City government during Prohibition era days. The following year (1926), carvers/fruiterers contributed $10 per acre towards funding for paving streets and building public works throughout Plainfield. By 1928 there were over 400 citizens living in Plainfield with businesses totaling over $50 thousand. In 1930–1931 City Council passed ordinances providing for racial segregation within schools despite objections from Mayor Hargrave who felt that "integrating Negroes into our white community would be disastrous." In 1933–1934 when taxes went up because of tight budget constraints due to World War II but no corresponding increase in population growth due to record low birthrates among whites (<1% annually)%, Council voted unanimously to annex other neighboring townships including Monterey Heights and Northmont so that their populations could exceed those of singleton villages like PlainFIELD without having their taxes raised.< ref name="plainFIELD">Monterey Heights With increasing economic prosperity since then things have changed; today's downtown area has experienced rapid redevelopment spearheaded by local governments across Indiana creating new jobs opportunities especially around Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company headquarters complex located just off I-465 Exit 70.

It is part of the Indianapolis–Elkhart-Westfield, IN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1824, it was laid out as a village by Adam Smith and others under the name "Plainfield". It became an incorporated town on February 20, 1868.township status trial date set for May 6 The first post office in Plainfield was established on December 12, 1827. The first store in what would become Plainfield was built by John Henson on the corner of State and Main Streets. A school was organized in 1830 and classes began in March 1831. The first storekeeper in Plainfield was Daniel Boone Aldrich Sr.. One account reports that when his father died (1825), Daniel Boone Aldrich purchased land east of State Street which he used to build a house called "The Druid" which stood until 1958 when it burned down. In 1840, George Washington Carlin came to live near Plainfield for about three years before moving away because he did not like Indian settlements there. In 1851, Abraham Lincoln made a speech at Webster Chapel here when he delivered his inaugural address from the steps of Old National Bank building on High Street near where today's I-465 exits onto I-70W . After his inauguration ceremony were completed inside Old National Bank Building across from Interstate 70W , Mr Lincoln walked over to Webster Chapel to deliver his remarks while several hundred people watched from high atop nearby hills - one account says they even had “canoes” brought up so people could watch him go! Soon after this event local newspapers started reporting sightings of Mr Lincoln all over Indiana including some that say he even went into plain sight! In 1865/66 PlainFIELD residents fought with help from Confederate forces during the American Civil War known as Battle of Elizabethtown . At least 3 citizens were killed along with many more injured or captured including 2 Captains who managed to make their escape back home
