Plainfield is a town in Clear Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,574 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Plainfield was John Fitzpatrick in 1814. By 1825, plainFIELD had a passenger stop on the Chicago and Erie Railroad. In 1827, Daniel Webster bought land in what is now Plainfield from Peter Hahn. Webster founded the village of Websterville there in 1830. On July 1, 1850, Plainfield became part of Clear Lake County when it was created from portions of Dearborn County and Johnson County. The new county seat was located in Lisle on the north side of Clear Lake. In 1875-76, three men laid out a township called "Plainfield Township". It grew slowly until it had a population of about 100 people by 1900. The township's first store opened at 9th and Elm Streets on October 10, 1902. The current town hall was built between 1912 and 1914 as part of a planned town center that never came to be because of World War I efforts to get military production moving eastward away fromIndiana's resources (the war actually prolonged production).
