The first people to live in Plainfield were the Potawatomi Indians and their allies who settled there in 1788. They also founded what became known as "The Village" on the present site of downtown Plainfield in 1802. The Village served as a model for much of Hamilton County until it was annexed by Indianapolis in 1904. In 1853, plainFIELD architect John A. Hays designed and built what is considered one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in the Midwest – the Stonington Hotel which still stands today and offers its guests elegant yet affordable accommodations. In 1881, auto manufacturer George Withers opened his plant here that would become one of America's most successful automobile companies – now part of Ford Motor Company. He employed many local residents including my great-grandfather Jens Jensen who worked here from 1920 to 1945 as an engineer and manager responsible for manufacturing more than 500 cars including some models that went into production before World War II! At various points during its history Plainfield has been home to banks (the First National Bank building now used as a theater), churches (First Presbyterian Church remains a prominent landmark), post offices (The Post Office Building still stands) and factories such as Chevrolet/Ford Motors plants which produced Model T Pinto pickups and Fords across three different decades starting with 1948 through 1966!
