The city is located on the eastern edge of Indianapolis and is bordered by Union Township to the north, LaPorte Township to the south, and Posey County to the west. It began as a small settlement on Creek Road west of what is now Interstate 465 in 1814. In 1835, Plainfield became an official town when it was surveyed by David Whitcomb under Act No. 16 of that year. Sheets Mill became its first permanent resident in 1836. In 1837, Indianola was founded east of Plainfield by John Nicholson; it too became an official town within a few years. In 1848, Posey County was organized from part of LaPorte Township and incorporated as a separate county with its own government; Plainfield remained its only county seat until 1861 when Jabez Gossage moved his business center from LaPorte to new downtown Indianapolis (now Union Station). After Gossage's death in 1865, Posey County passed out of control and was annexed by neighboring Monroe County; however, Clearwater Township still remains unincorporated in Posey County and has jurisdiction over Lakeshore Shores across I-465 from Plainfield proper.* The first European settler in what would become Plainfield was Nicholas Henniker who arrived circa 1795. He built his home near what is now State Street/I-465 just south of where he would later established his plantation Henniker's Ferry*. A second early settler named George Washington Hardesty came around 1800* while land claims were being processed following Indiana's cession from Michigan Territory.* Hardesty set up shop on present day North Main Street between West Elmhurst Avenue/I-465 and South Main Street/Church Road* which would eventually be renamed State Street after him*. Another early settler named Daniel Boone also lived nearby on White Oak Creek before moving downriver into this area some time after 1800†††††(*note: according to one source Boone may have actually been born about 1775 at least)*. By 1821*, two more pioneers had moved into this area – Peter Bogdanovich from Russia (*note: Bogdanovich may have died young or never had any children) and Michael Hogan who had come overland via Canada around 1800‡‡‡(*Note: Michael Hogan likely immigrated with his family sometime before 1840*) *. As more settlers arrived throughout this period*, many streets were given their current namesakes such as White Oak Lane for example (#2 street today), McCoy Drive for William McCoy (* note: McCoy may have come overland with other pioneer families around 1800), etc..** In 1830*, Illinois Territorial Governor Simon Cameron sent a survey team led by Captain James Kapp to explore potential settlements along what are now I-465 (then known as North Bend Road*) and creek beds east of where I-465 presently meets Starkey Road* * Note: This area lay within present day Union Township until 1862 when Jabez Gossage moved his business center from La Porte to new downtown Indianapolis (now Union Station). After Gossage's death in 1865, Posey County passed out of control and was annexed by neighboring Monroe County; however, Clearwater Township still remains unincorporated in Posey County and has jurisdiction over Lakeshore Shores across I-465 from PlainFIELD proper.* As farmland developed rapidly near what becomes todayposeyCountyline* several log cabins were constructed beginning about 1830 or so due lack thereof available building material then available commercially [*note: these buildings continued standing until demolished during World War II]. These structures served both as homes for settlers & their families& #39;s churches grew up around them becoming popular tourist destinations especially during periods such as1850s thru 1870s when there wasn't much industry happening outside Indy & #39;s limits then] . One notable structure that stood until demolished during World War II (& remaining live memory throughguided tours every summer since then!) WAS THE "PLAINFIELD LODGE" which served both purposes - housing settlers (& their families) while also hosting meetingsof local businessmen starting about 1840 etc…. One particularly interesting aspectabout THE PLAINFIELD LODGE relates back TO ITS DATE - IT WAS FIRST BUILT AS A CONFESSIONAL CHURCH BY ANGRY INDIANANS IN FLAMES!… [website link omitted jfk assassination] About 1850 or so another large cabin complex called "KINNEY'S CABIN" got started ALSO SEPARATELY FROM HOME OF MRS KINNEY BUT FARTHER WEST ON KENNY RD NOW KNOWN AS CLOSE TO EAST HIGH SCHOOL]. Some early residents even managedto get themselves some pretty fancy horses!
