Plainfield is a community in the Northwest Indiana county seat of St. Joseph, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 24,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town began as an agricultural village in 1847 and became a city in 1903. The name "Plainfield" comes from Indian word "prajña", meaning "plain ground." In 1848, John Gregg established a mill on the White River and named it Plainfield Mill after his home place in Sussex County, England. The first stores opened in Plainfield in 1853 by Capt. Samuel Fenton and Edward Ladd with cash advances from New York investors. By 1865, there were ten stores and seventy-two residents. The first post office was established at Plainfield on October 12, 1853 by Daniel Davenport with letters sent to Pekin (now Peoria), Illinois; Terre Haute (now Indianapolis), Indiana; Danville (now Dublin), Illinois; Rockford (now Rockford Hills), Illinois; West Point Junction (later North Elgin Junction), Michigan; Galesburg Junction (later Ottawa Junction), Illinois; and Hammonds Plainsburgh (later Warsaw). In 1863, Wm Hite built a gristmill at which he operated until 1868 when he sold it to Ayer & Cobbett who renamed it Plainfield Mills No 3 Grist Mill # 1527 for use by George Stephenson's locomotive builders company Stephenson Manufacturing Co.. From its founding until 1903, PlainFIELD had one school district: Normal School District No 1 which served children from ages six through eighteen years old. In 1893, however, Normal School District No 1 merged with another school district to form Dearborn public schools which replacedNormal School District No 2A that had been founded in 1886 by Rev Elisha Otis Wright as Dearborn Public Schools District 8th Grade Center with land donated by Nicholas Dolan McCormick along Rush Creek north of present Day Easton Avenue east of I Street south near Racine Avenue where Depot Road crossedpresent day Easton Avenue and Dearborn Street now enters Rush Creek - this new organization formed today's eastern border betweenEaston Ave./Dearborn St./Rush Creek Rd./I/Street

plainfield, Indiana was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1776. The town was named after Captain John Plainfield, a Revolutionary War hero. The first settler in what is now Plainfield was James Henson, who purchased land from the Potawatomi in 1792. In 1805, Daniel Boone and his party explored and mapped the area that would become Plainfield. When he discovered rich mineral deposits in what is now Plainfield, Boone decided to settle there. His group of settlers built mills and erected homes around 1810-1811. By 1830, the population of Plainfield had reached 1,500 people. In 1831, Indiana became a state and Plainfield became its capital. The town prospered until the early 1800s when it began to decline because of low population density and lack of resources.
