Plainfield is a village in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The village was platted on November 15, 1824 by order of Col. James Montero and named for General Anthony Wayne's encampment on Plainfield Heath near present-day Uniontown. The original plat included only one lot and it lay east of what is now Main Street. On July 16, 1827, the town charter was amended to authorize the erection of two churches—one Methodist and one Presbyterian—and to provide for a schoolhouse and other necessary public improvements. On October 8, 1830, a road from Terre Haute to Plainfield was completed as part of Indian Road system connecting Terre Haute with Vincennes across the state line in Indiana Territory (now West Virginia). In 1835–36 additional land comprising what is now Plainfield Township was acquired from the Potawatomi Nation. This land extended south into La Porte County about where current day Keystone Avenue meets US 82/US 9 north of Warsaw; however this land remained undeveloped until after Lafayette Purchase which began purchasing large parcels of newly drained agricultural lands adjacent to I-70 at that time known as "the Agricultural Belt". On December 20th 1840 LafayettePurchase delivered 431 acres adjoining Warsaw Township just west or southwest of present day Keystone Avenue in what would become Plainfield Township; this parcel became known as "Lafayette Purchase Addition" subsequent to its purchase by Lafayette Purchase Company Limited Partnership bearing common name "New Albany Rural Land Grant Association". In 1846–47 another piece or parcel situated east or northeast of Polebridge Road between present day Keystone Avenue and Uniontown Creek became known as "Polebridge Addition". After years of wrangling over name changes (due primarily to lack thereof an agreed upon unambiguous definition among variousoupers) within regular township meetings all property located within eastern portion bounded by Polebridge Road/Uniontown Creek (northwest side), Heights Boulevard/Mt Pleasant Drive (east side), Lafayette Purchase Addition (southwest side), Maple Grove Drive/Iowa Rd./pioneer Hwy./New Albany Rd.(western side)), Cedarhurst Dr./Hawkeye Rd./Hercules Rd., finally New Albany Rural Land Grant Association took on formal name change on January 12th 1951 becoming simply called "PlainFIELD Township", following annexation by neighboring Lafayette Purchase Company Limited Partnership from unorganized territory west Richland Township along I-70 corridor immediately southwesterly boundary line joining Richland Township with Delaware County becomingDEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE - PLAINFIELD COUNTY

Plainfield was founded in 1814 by a group of settlers who came from the small town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1837, Plainfield became the site of what is now known as the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds were also home to the first high school in Indiana and remain that way today. In 1916, Plainfield became part of the United States after World War I. The city has seen many expansions over time, including annexations from other municipalities in 1972 and 1998; and a major renovation project completed in 2006 which replaced most of the infrastructure at the former municipal center with modern amenities. Today, Plainfield is a thriving community with a rich history that is still being enjoyed by its residents today.
The first white settlers in Plainfield were John and Susannah White. They arrived in 1795 and started a farm on the present-day site of the city. The Whites were pioneers, setting an example for other families to follow. They also became involved in local politics and helped form the first town government. In 1827, they moved to what is now Indianapolis, but continued to live in Plainfield until their death in 1925.
