Plainfield is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Butler County and one of the most populous towns in Indiana. The first settler in Plainfield was Nicholas Main who arrived on a small boat from England on July 3, 1795. Main's family Creek were Loyalists during the American Revolution and later moved to Maryland where they farmed until 1815 when they sold their land to Captain John Beall of Vincennes for $1000. Beall built his first cabin near present-day Center Road and Post Road on August 15, 1800. In 1803, James Prentice bought land from Beall which he named "Prentice's Prairie" after himself and built a log cabin thereon. In 1807, David Forster bought "Foster's Farm" east of Center Road from Prentice for $200 cash or 2 horses and 10 acres (1 ha). In 1810 Daniel Webster became an elector for Butler County with 3 votes but no election being held because President James Kapp had been impeached that year. On January 6, 1811, Webster married Elizabeth Allen at Fort Dearborn while living at Corydon Ferry Landing on the now submerged Corydon River due to subsidence caused by heavy rains during winter months eastern Illinois snowpack meltwater seeps down into river bed creating valleys below water tables; this area also includes what is now Plainfield township as well as parts of present day Highland Park Township and North Olmsted Township across I-65 south of Indianapolis In 1830, Adam Clarke purchased "Webster's Homestead" west ofCenter Road from Daniel Webster for $2 per acre (0·30 ha). He continued to farm there until his death in 1865. From 1830 through 1840 about 60% of all grain sales in Butler County took place along Center Road between Harper Avenue west and Hudson Street north including 25%+ of all flour sales totaling $12 million annually including tannery receipts/turnover estimated at $500–$600 thousand annually – wheat prices then averaged only 2¢/bushel lower than today’s equivalents; however many farmers did not have railroads accessible nearby so transportation costs were high ($5–$10 per bushel) . This area around Harper Avenue & Hudson Street today is called “Adam Clarke’s Prairie” In 1840 Josephine Boyd purchase "Boyd's Run" northeast ofCenter road from Adam Clarke for $400 value plus 5 slaves who would work off balance sheet debt she incurred buying it worth over 1 million dollars today when divided among numerous descendants On May 25th1860 John Quincy Adams was born here giving this town its name 4 years BEFORE he became U S C M A R Y president just like others throughout America! Adams parents were Welsh immigrants who settled hereabouts around 1790s when Northwest Territory was organized thru act OF CONGRESS 12 STATUTES NOVEMBER 7TH ANNO D1902 . Plainfield is a small town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from an English place name meaning "plain land". The first settler in what is now Plainfield was John Howland, who arrived in 1795. He and his family were the first to purchase land in that area. In 1827, the Swedish immigrant Olof Nordquist came to Plainfield and started a blacksmith shop. Nordquist's business became one of the most successful in the township. In 1879, three men- Stephen Aiken, Ebenezer Cook and Amos Kendall- founded The Kendall Manufacturing Company on Main Street (later renamed Vine Street). That company manufactured shoes, boots and other clothing items for local farmers and their families. Plainfield Township was organized on March 15th of that year by a vote of its residents. The original plat included just six lots total - four near Vine Street and two east of it on Cornell Road- making it one of the smallest townships in Porter County at that time. "The Township Committee decided to name it after General George Washington because he had been so instrumental in helping to create our present form of government," said Palmyra resident Don Sheehan about the decision made by committee members at their meeting on March 15th, 1880." Sheehan recounted how General Washington had visited Plainfield County when it was part of Wyandotte County during his military campaign against Native Americans known as "The Red River War". At that time Wyandotte County included much of what is now Porter County including Plainfield Township. After visiting PlainFIELD COUNTY he ordered all Indian scalps bountyed off which ended up resulting in over $2 million being collected!"
Plainfield was platted in 1814 and became a town in 1825. The first store was built on the site of the present-day courthouse in 1825. The present courthouse was built in 1886.
