Plainfield is a town in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The name "plain" comes from the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what is now Plainfield was John Graves in 1809. There were twelve families who settled here by 1821. The first school was built in 1825 and the first post office was established in 1827. By 1830, there were over fifty families living here and businesses had been erected including a tannery and a gristmill. In 1830, three men came to this area and founded the town of Plainfield on land that they had acquired from Joseph Kapp of DeKalb Township, Illinois (now West Allis). They named their new community after Anthony Wayne's mill which had just been built near Chicago. The first store opened in Plainfield on October 12, 1830 by Jno Houghton with two barrels of oil for sale and four bushels of wheat for delivery to Detroit ($10 worth of goods at that time). A gristmill was also built soon afterwards by Nicholas Thompson on the same site as Houghton's store. For many years this mill operated both commercially and educationally; it trained students for work in nearby mills until 1865 when it closed down due to competition from larger mills south of Indianapolis. In 1840, Captain John Fenton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Plainfield along Brush Creek where he laid out an ordinance providing for township government with five citizens per township unit with one vote each “for all concerns within its jurisdiction” subject only to such general meetings as may be called for special purposes or elections... He also appointed Ulysses S Grant collector thereof… This early pioneer township government removed much later when county government was organized under the Indiana Constitution (1870), but some vestiges remain today including a courthouse square where street names are still spelled out front like old days: Hwy 10 Wagon Road/Grant Street/Washington Avenue/Norman Avenue/Erie Avenue etc., plaques marking historical sites such as Anthony Wayne's mill & schoolhouse etc., village green & civic center complex still intact; even GARTS buses stop opposite church parking lot! The first settler in what is now Plainfield was Nicholas Suter who arrived in 1788. He and his family were among the earliest to call this area home. The fort served as a trading post and military base during the American Revolutionary War and was also used by General Anthony Wayne during his invasion of Canada in 1814. In 1846, James Wabash donated land to make up what would become Plainfield Township. In 1851, Surveyor General George Stephenson approved platting out a township with a population of only 25 people because he believed that such an small community could not support itself without government assistance. The first settler to move into their newly created township was Levi Tilton Sr., who moved from Peeblesville, Kentucky on November 10th of that year. In 1865-66 when Indianapolis began to grow rapidly becoming an important commercial center due to its location onthe Indiana Central Railroad (ICR), many settlers decided to move away from downtown for fear it would be destroyed by construction projects around that time period; however, little changed about downtown until after World War II when it saw significant growth as part of the urban renewal movement which aimed to rejuvenate older neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis following decades of neglect and decay. A new high school opened in Plainfield in 1969 which helped spur further development within downtown Indy and neighboring areas while still providing access for students living inside Downtown Indy limits; this led directly to today’s large amount of retail presence within Downtown Indy boundaries as well as more residential development east/west across I-465 near US-32 – making Plainfield one continuous neighborhood with some degree or form of shopping available within easy walking distance whether you are inside or outside limits always compared to other parts of Indianapolis where access depends largely upon car travel or long walks/ Ride-sharing from central business districts like Midtown Indy or even Union Station if you want something close but not too close geographically speaking despite efforts by local officials over recent years
