The first settler in what would become Plainfield was Ebenezer Kneeland in 1814. The town was named after Ebenezer's farmstead in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. The township was organized on November 3, 1836, and became a part of the larger city of Indianapolis on December 15th of that year. In 1916, Plainfield began construction on its present-day Civic Center which opened to the public on May 10th, 1917. The center has since been used as both a library and community center. Plainfield is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was platted in 1837. The first post office in Plainfield was established in 1839. The name of the town comes from a creek that flows through it. In 1846, the land for Plainfield was purchased by James Clerk and John Hinterman from the Native Americans. The first house on what is now Main Street was built on this tract of land in 1846. In 1860, trade between Ohio and Indiana became available due to the American Civil War which had started two years earlier in Kentucky. This new commerce led to an increase in population in Plainfield as people came to trade goods with friends and family back home. In 1865, Mayor William Tilton erected a public square near what is now First Avenue and Main Street which served as the center of town until 1870 when a new courthouse was built on State Street across from modern day Hallmark Cards plaza. The community experienced growth during its early years with many dwellings being constructed along Second Avenue north of where it presently meets First Avenue (now Wabash Avenue). By 1870 there were over 50 businesses operating within walking distance of each other making Plainsfield one of the most active communities east of Chicago at that time ! ! ! During this time much development took place including multiple churches (St Peters Episcopal Church being built on current University Boulevard), a schoolhouse (First Presbyterian School), several grocery stores/markets, three physicians (Dr John A Greenberger Dr J H Morse Dr Augustus Mapes) and two banks-the First National Bank and then Union National Bank- both functioning until 1907 when they merged into the present dayBankers Trust Company!. !
The Plainfield village was founded in 1851 by Methodist missionaries. In the 1870s, Plainfield became a railroad town and became a center for agricultural production. The population of the town increased rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1920 it had reached over 10,000 people. The town's growth stopped after World War II and it has since shrunk to around 1,500 people.
