Plainfield is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries in 1688. French investors founded a trading post near present-day Plainfield in 1785 and soon began expanding their influence into what is now Hancock County. In 1802, Henry Dearborn created a Township with much of present-day Plainfield within it as well as parts of West Lafayette and Newburgh Counties. In 1814, the USA acquired Illinois from France but did not include Plainfield in that state. Louisiana Purchase made all of Indiana part of the United States, including Hancock County (then called Westmoreland). The first settlers arrived around this time and by 1816 there were about 60 people living in what would become Plainfield. By 1830, the population had reached 300 and by 1840 it had increased to 1,000+. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from nearby Fort Wayne decided to join Union forces rather than fight on the side of slavery against President Abraham Lincoln’s America. Many residents took up arms against the Confederacy and many homes were destroyed or taken over by Union forces during that time period. The town was founded on April 12th, 1836 when three families moved from Goshen Township to start an agricultural township called “ plain field” which stretched along present day I–70 east for about one mile until it intersected with canal Road #2 south which led northwest towards Indianapolis; today’s I– 70 corridor crossing Interstate 465 provides direct access to both large cities without having to drive through rural areas like Plainfield where most interstates cross at intersections known locally as “ exit roads” such as I–465/I–10 or I–465/I 611). One hundred years later on October 5th 2018 – after being voted into existence via referendum - Plainsfields newest business district – located just off I-465 northbound Exit 9 – opened its doors!

Plainfield is a small town in the southern Indiana county of LaPorte. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Brownsburg, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would be Plainfield was John Ligon in 1814. He and his family founded a log cabin on Hwy 40 near where it now stands. A post office called Plainfield was opened in 1827, and by 1830, there were 10 residents living there. Plainfield became a Township on November 3, 1838 under the jurisdiction of Terre Haute County. On February 14, 1850, itbecame an incorporated village when all its citizens voted to become one with a common board of trustees and limited liability company stockholders appointed by the state legislature as part of promotional legislation for Indiana's " incorporation movement." In 1855-56 (the early days of the Little America Railroad), some men from Plainfield built rails along that line from Fort Wayne to Terre Haute and back again - something which had never been done before! The railroad reached PlainFIELD on July 4th,1857! The townspeople erected a large Union depot/storefront on their old home square just southwest of today's courthouse Square – still standing (and now used as a daycare). That same year saw also the first Agricultural fair here featuring many exhibitors from surrounding communities like Terre Haute and Lafayette. In 1861-62 (the American Civil War), several volunteers from Plainfield enlisted in volunteer military units serving at Fort Harrison near Indianapolis; they later returned home to live out their terms of service but their families continued to reside here until 1865 when they left for good after Northern armies overran most parts of Southwestern Indiana including this area – leaving behind only some remains underlying those foundations still visible today! One such soldier’s tombstone can still be seen inside Old Courthouse Square across from current day Justice Center – dedicated July 9th 1863 (just five years after his death!). After the war ended there was much discussion about whether or not Plainfields should rejoinTerreHaute County because so many people had moved away during that time period; however no action took place until around 1920 when officials decided that “It would appear that there are few if any permanent residents remaining in plainfield [sic]” so Accordinglyon October 1st1920 an actwas passed authorising township status once more for plainFIELD with power vested therein to dissolve or merge with othertownships withinTerreHauteCounty should such desires arise; however no such fusionoccurreduntil 1984!! On January 6th 1935 Dr J E Smith entered into full partnership withDr G S Winkler becoming 'J E & G S Smith plumbers'. Plainfield is an unincorporated community in Crawford County, Indiana. The post office at Plainfield was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914.
