Plainfield, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the County seat of Posey County. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It forms the eastern border of Indianapolis and is just east of Lucasville on State Road 362. The first white people to call Plainfield their home were pioneers Captain John Cook and his family who settled in what is now Posey County in 1814. The area that would become Plainfield was part of Alleghany Township when it was created by order of General James Wilkinson in 1827. In 1868, plainfield became a town after being chosen as one by an vote of the people living in the township boundary lines which stretched from near present-day Noblesville to Evansville on the northwest side of Indianapolis along today's I-465 Corridor. In 1911, Plainfield annexed part of Grayslake Township which had been formed from parts of South Bend, Dearborn Heights, West Lafayette, and Broad Ripple townships earlier that year. That annexation left Grayslake with a population of only 535 residents when Plainfield annexed it again six years later with a population exceeding 10,000 for the first time in its history! In 1916, Plainfield became one hundredth municipality when it annexed away part of Fishersburg Township (later Austin Township). In 1933, PlainFIELD passed an ordinance establishing prohibition laws within its borders effective immediately; this led to much controversy among many residents who felt they had been wronged by government action while others saw prohibition as an important step towards creating social stability during times OF social upheaval such as Prohibition era America. Plainfield was founded in 1824 as a small community on the banks of the White River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of 1,000. By 1836 Plainfield had become an important transportation center for the area, and its wharf became known as "the best in Indiana." In 1840 Clear Lake was created in Plainfield's southeast corner, and later that year the first post office was established there. The late 1800s were marked by significant growth in Plainfield. In 1892 Plainfield became one of five towns in central Indiana to be incorporated as villages. That same year, the first school building was erected in plain sight across from the wharf on Main Street. The village continued to grow throughout the 19th century, with new housing and businesses being built along State Road 10 east of downtown. In 1916 Plainfield became one of several communities within central Indiana to become part of the newly formed city of Indianapolis. At that time, PlainFIELD had a population of over 60,000 people! By 1924- 1925 efforts were under way to improve infrastructure within Indianapolis including creating a sewage system and improving roadways and bridges. With rapid growth came problems such as limited parking space available on main streets and lack of public restrooms; however, officials refused to give up their good reputation for responsiveness to citizen needs. In 1976- 1977 plans were underway for what would eventually become One America World Trade Center (OAWTC). The project would require demolition or relocation of several blocks south of downtown - most notably Old City Hall which sat on top of an abandoned mine shaft dating back to 1790! Although many residents objected to this measure - largely due to concerns about traffic congestion - officials pushed through with preliminary construction starting in October 1978 and completed by November 1980 despite opposition from some residents who felt they had been shortchanged financially during the process.
Plainfield is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Plainfield was founded in 1814 by General David Dixon and named for him. It became a city in 1903.
