Plainfield is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Plainfield was derived from "The Plains" which were surveyed by Captain John Stroud in 1788 and lay to the east of present day Plainfield. Plainfield has been settled since 1824 when Elijah Hicks built his first store there. In 1827, James Crouse founded the village of Terre Haute and platted it near what is now Plainfield on land that had been donated by Judge Isaac Brockway.Terre Haute grew rapidly due to its location as an important transportation hub on the National Road (now I-465). Many farmers who could not afford to move away from their homes found new homes in Terre Haute because it was easy to get milk, wheat and other goods for sale at the local hotels and stores. In 1848, General George Aiken decided that TerreHaute should be renamed PlainFIELD after his old stomping ground in Georgia where he served as a brigadier general during the Mexican War. The town's growth continued apace with many settlers coming through TerreHaute looking for available land while others founded businesses such as groceries and hardware stores along Main Street between Third Street and Fourth Street. It wasn't until 1885 when a group of businessmen led by J P Crowley bought 12 acres (5 hectares) of land just north of downtown TerreHaute and began construction on what would become known as Crowley's Hill or simply Crowley’s Ridge which still stands today across First Avenue from downtownplainfield The original plat for what would become plainFIELD shows three square miles with one mile (1 kilometer) per side lots measuring 60x60 feet with a depth of 6 feet (1 meter). There were no houses or fences then but there are now over 1,000 buildings dating back to this early period including some that still stand including: The Masonic Lodge; Mrs. Phelps' Store; Mr & Mrs Hayes' Store; 3 Grain Elevators; 2 Masons Copying House; 2 Blacksmithsmithies; etc...Over time more building were erected including churches such as First Presbyterian Church (1892), Methodist Episcopal Church (1902), Sacred Heart Catholic Parish (1929), Holy Cross Catholic Parish (1936)and most notably America's first hospital - First Baptist Hospital - opened in 1907 just eastofpresent day Monroe streetin plainFIELD

Plainfield is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County, Indiana, United States. The population was 34,859 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Wayne County after Indianapolis. The original town site was located on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Plainfield. A post office called "Plainfield" was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1868. The current town site was settled by early American settlers who were drawn to its strategic location as a trade center on two main routes connecting Chicago with Detroit and Cincinnati via the Great Lakes region. The first permanent settler at the current site arrived around 1800, and by 1812 there were fourteen inhabitants living in what became Plainfield Township. By 1830, however, only six families remained within township boundaries; these moved out to form new townships which formed part of Wayne County: White Township (1830), Black Township (1834), Easton Township (1836), Franklin Township (1846), West Bloomfield Township (1848) and Greenville Township (1851). The first school in Dearborn County opened its doors in November 1830 as an academy for learners of all ages under teacher instruction from Reverend John Fenton. In 1840, when Indiana became a state, Plainfield elected its first mayor: George Hinkleman. In 1856–57 twenty-four-year-old Daniel Webster served as mayor during one of America's earliest mayoral elections - he would later become Ulysses S Grant's Vice President - while residents voted on three representatives to represent them on the county board of education which governed local affairs such as land use and schools. One resident also served four terms as treasurer from 1876 through 1880; another held various positions including justice of peace from 1889 until 1893 before dying suddenly at age seventy-six years old while serving on court case jury duty; nonetheless he remains considered one of Plainfield's most notable citizens due to his long record of public service despite his advanced age at that time In 1865–66 an act known as the Webster Act allowed for voting without property qualifications for all male citizens over eighteen years old who could provide $5 per month or more rent payable direct to the sheriff or tax collector; this increase made voting easier for low income residents who could not afford such fees . In 1905 – 1906 Anthony J Doyle ran unsuccessfully for Mayor against incumbent James W Callahan with 1% support from voters but achieved wide publicity due to his candidacy following widespread calls for reform within City Hall following scandals involving corrupt members of City Council . With improved transportation standards available after World War I and increasing suburban development throughout Wayne County – much like today’s Downtown Plainfield area – many people Clearer began moving away from downtown areas towards becoming “downtowners” during this era characterized by high rates of commercial activity along Main Street/. This trend continued into Prohibition Era times when alcohol sales increased rapidly leading some businesses across town closing their doors unable compete against bootlegging operations conducted outbid by larger stores popping up throughout rural areas near cities such as Hammond then Danville now Elkhart Lake making it difficult if not impossible for small businessmen like myself to survive outside our homes during prohibition period
The Plainfield area was first settled in the early 1800s. The area became a part of Indiana in 1816. In 1824, the town of Plainfield was founded by Nicholas de la Halle and John Pitkin. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, the village of Plainfield was founded and quickly gained popularity as a commercial center for the surrounding area. By 1840, the population had increased to over 250 people. In 1845, Plainfield became an incorporated town with a population of over 500 people. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1850 when it had a population of almost 1,000 people. However, during the 1850s, Plainfield began to experience financial problems and lost its status as a commercial center. As a result, thetown declined and eventually disappeared from existence in 1860.
