The first permanent settler in Peru was Isaac Greenwood who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on what is now Green Road. Greenwood was an early promoter of agriculture in this area, breeding horses and cattle for local trade and providing food for himself and his numerous families. In 1826, John Ralston founded a trading post along Wabash River near present-day Peru City. This became one of the most important posts on the river because it served as a conduit between eastern Kentucky and western Indiana. Ralston opened up trade with Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and other states during this period. In 1830, Perry Hobson came to Peru from Ohio with his family to start a farmstead which he named after his father-in-law Major General Daniel Boone (1765 – 1850). The Hobson family would remain active in farming here until their death in 1906. In 1836, David Bruce purchased land adjacent to Hobson's farm from James Sibley for $4 per acre ($204 million adjusted dollars). Bruce developed this land into one of the most important cotton plantations in America during the 1800s due to its variety of soils and climates found hereabouts."
Peru, Indiana was organized as a town on November 15, 1811. It became a full-fledged county on March 14, 1821. Peru was named for the Inca king Embarqampa who had died in 1772.
