Peru, Indiana was originally settled by the Potawatomis in the 1830s. The area now includes parts of Lima and Lafayette counties, as well as parts of Indianapolis and Hammond County. In 1836, the Potawatomis sold their holdings to a group of Germans who named themselves the Davenport Germans. The Davenport Germans came from Germany and were among the earliest settlers in what is now Peru, Indiana. They began farming land around Lafayette and Lima townships on the east side of present-day Purdue University campus. In 1840, they built a large house on Niles Road in downtown Peru that served as their home until they moved to Lisle in 1868. By 1870, they had developed a small market economy with a few shops and two tanning businesses located near wherepresent-day IUPUI stands today. From this early stage, German culture greatly influenced Peruvian life and education here in central Indiana. In 1873, John Cramer purchased land adjacent to Purdue’s campus for use as an agricultural research station known as “Cramer Field Station” after Dr. Friedrich Cramer (1819-1889). This site would eventually become one of America’s first national universities with Cramer Field Station becoming one of its most famous scientific institutions during World War I when it played an important role inthe development of airplane technology! At first only men could attend Cramer Field Station but female students soon joined the male students here at IUPUI! After World War II ended, many women returned to Purdue University after having worked hard during World War II while men continued working at Cramer Field Station or elsewhere on campus. Today there are still some Men at CUPS who continue our important work at this historic site! The history of Peru is filled with contributions from many people including leaders such as David Thompson (1793-1855), James Kapp (1827-1900), George Wacker (1872-1948), Alonzo Mourning (1911-1981) and more! Many local residents also contributed to this rich history by serving on various local boards, committees or other organizations over time which has shaped our community today! Some examples include: Mr. & Mrs.(John) Hickey Sr., Mrs.(Barbara) Youngblood; Rev.(Walter) Mapes; Mr./Mrs.(Editha/Linda Osterhaus; Judge(Ronald E.) Weiser Jr.; Mrs./Dr.(Helen A.) Neuman; Dr./Msgr.(Doris J.) Bechtel III; Rev./ Msgr.(Deborah J.) Trumpeter IV through her father Fred Trumpeter III!

In the year 1821, a group of Indiana farmers, led by James M. Ziegler, traveled to Peru, located in what is now Peru, Indiana. They had heard about the fertile and rich land there and were excited to explore it. They arrived at what is now Lima and started out planting maize fields. However, they soon realized that their efforts were not enough to achieve their goal of bringing food back to their families. So they decided to look for other ways to get sustenance. Some of the farmers in Peru began growing wine grapes as an alternative to maize. But this venture also didn’t go well because vines need more sunlight than corn does for growth. So instead of trying again with different crops, the farmers decided to build a winery on their property. The first winemaker in Peru was Adolphus Wistar who built his winery on the bank of the Río de la Plata River near today’s Quito City. The Perry family also played an important role in this development by founding a flour mill in Lima and eventually shipping flour all over Indiana and Ohio!
