Smith and his family as the new site for what would become Posey County. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Peru is located in the Midwestern United States on the Wabash River. The first settler in Peru was John C. Smith who arrived there on December 12th, 1815 with his family from Maryland. The town was formally founded on February 14th of that year by Smith and other local officials after some land purchases from the surrounding area were completed including a piece of land known today as "Old Lima" which served as a courthouse and other government buildings until it burned down in 1881. As one of the early towns in Indiana Territory, Peru had access to all sorts of resources needed to support its growth such as timber, lead ore and limestone which helped make it an important pioneer community during this time period according to historian Drs. Michael Junker and Don Painter-Walker who wrote about pre-1914 history of Posey County in their book "Posey's Past: A History of Posey County (Indiana)". In addition to these resources however, Peru also received help from neighboring states such as Kentucky through military donations or trade which helped promote agricultural development throughout central Indiana during this time period according to Drs. In 1854 Peru voted to secede from Unionist Illinois due to frustration with state policies including poll taxes which discriminated against Native Americans like themselves .
