Peru, Indiana was first settled by the Wea Indians in 1787. After a few years, the Peruvian community moved to what is now Peru,Indiana because of the good soil and lack of trees in their home country. The original settlers were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, beans, wheat and other crops. They also raised chickens and cows. In 1810, a post office was established in Peru and mail was sent from Lima until 1865. By this time, Peru had become a small town with a population of around 100 people. In 1824, an act was passed that provided for the creation of counties within Indiana Territory. On November 3rd of that year, County William Wirt became one of these counties. That same year, James Higgs came to Peru to purchase land from the Wea Indians and started farming there. He built his first house on what is now State Road 692 which stands today as a reminder of this important early settler’s life in Peru
In 1810, the United States acquired Peru, Indiana from Spain. The area that now includes Peru, Indiana was part of the Northwest Territory until it was acquired by the United States in 1821. In 1830, the Northwest Territory was divided into several districts and Peru, Indiana became a part of District No. 3. The district boundaries were changed multiple times over the years and in 1871, Peru, Indiana became a part of District No. 4. In 1907, District No. 4 was renamed District No. 5 and in 1911District No. 5 was merged with District No. 6 to form DISTRICT NOONLINE 7 which included all of current-day PERU COUNTY as well as portions of WOODSTOCK COUNTY and BUCKINGHAM COUNTY
