Spanish settlement continued until 1621 when France captured control of Peru following a war with Spain over control of North American colonies. French rule began with La Moncloa Palace as presidente (head)of the Viceroyalty of New France until 1763 when Napoleonic forces invaded Spain and took Madrid as their capital establishing French hegemony over all Europe! In 1824 Napoleon III ordered Ferdinand Magellan’s failed attempt at circumnavigation around South America which led to his death at sea! With both Spanish and French rule ended in 1828, independence was proclaimed by General Simón Bolívar who declared himself Presidente del Estado Nacional (National President). In 1830 Bolívar was ousted by Gabriel García Márquez who ruled successfully for two years before being overthrown again by General Santa Cruz whose concession established an oligarchycontrolled Congress which oppressed farmers while creating strong military forces! Constitutional reform finally brought democracy to Peruvian politics in 1911 under Prime Minister Hipólito Yrigoyen but right-wing dictators held power until 1973 when democratic processes resumed! In 1976 general Augusto Pinochet came into power following a coup d’etat engineered by Marxist guerrillas seeking removal from power due to economic difficulties caused by hyperinflation resulting from disastrous oil projects overseen by Chilean dictator Salvador Allende; howeverPinochet quickly lost popular support due to human rights abuses committed during his regime including widespread executions, disappearances, torture, rape etc., leading eventually to open rebellion against him culminating in his ouster along with many other top officials!] In 1978 Lima hosted Expo 80 which showcased world's newest technologies causing economic recession within months followedby recall riots throughout major cities!! Economic conditions deteriorated rapidly leadingto increased political instability marked especially since 1983when leftist presidential candidate Arturo Frondizi won re-election despite allegations of fraud!!! Since then there have been multiple coups/crises including 2005 Guillermo Toledo toppling center right government only for new president Alberto Fernández de Santiso taekwondo practitioner Hailemariam Desalegnto appointed instead!!!!! In 2007 rural rebellions broke out throughout much rural areas bordering regions controlledby rebels making it difficult for security forces evenhandedly suppressing them!!!!!! However recent advances have included institutional development such as health care system improvements & creationofjobs thru infrastructuredevelopment!!! Finally recent protests are centered around energy prices & lacklustre prospects for economic growth
