After spending several years surveying land grant properties which he had purchased from the government, Colonel Bickford decided to settle in what is now Noble'sville because it met all three requirements: close to a river for water supply, deep enough to support navigation but not too deep so as not to impede trade with other countries on the north side of Lake Erie; accessible by carriage or wagon road from Indianapolis; and having plenty of wood for fuel for mills that could be built along the river bank surrounding him."
