In 1862 Main Street was widened into four lanes between Jackson Avenue and Perry Street as part of a railway project to link Indianapolis with Nauvoo; this widening accelerated during the Civil War because Union GeneralUlysses S Grant ordered that no civilians be allowed within three miles (5 km) of any Confederate artillery emplacements (). In 1865 Main Street was extended eastward along Jackson Avenue past present-day Thompson Square () to connect with Prospect Road (), then southward along Prospect Road past today's Harrison Square () before turning northeast at US Highway 60 (US 60) junction to reach its original terminus at Jackson Avenue today. A major renovation/upgrading project began around 2005-2006 that added over 100 apartments including 50 luxury units (), as well as updated infrastructure such as underground parking garage and water system ().
