New Castle, Indiana is a small town located in the central region of the United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. A post office was established at Newcastle about this time and remained in operation until 1893. In 1892 Griggs constructed a sawmill which became one of the largest mills in Northwest Indiana. One hundred years later milling continued with new construction including a modern paper plant which began production in 1995; it continues to be run as an independent company today. The population of New Castle increased from 350 in 1801 to 2,811 in 1830, before declining to 1,805 in 1850. New Castle's population reached its peak of 3,000 in 1930 but declined again after the Great Depression. In the 1950s and 1960s, New Castle began to experience a revival as an agricultural center with growth in farming, manufacturing, and education.
