On July 1, 1824, the first permanent settler in New Castle was George Dick. The town was organized on December 4, 1824 and named for General Anthony Wayne who had died in 1823. In 1830, the town voted to incorporate as a village. On May 25, 1830, the village adopted a resolution providing for school teaching and appropriations for that purpose. The first school opened in October of 1830. In 1839, the Indiana General Assembly passed an act authorizing the erection of a courthouse and jail within New Castle limits. This building was completed in 1840 and served as the court house until it burned down in 1861. In 1850, New Castle voters approved a resolution authorizing their incorporation into a city under the name of Indianapolis; however this amendment failed to pass when it was brought up for signature by Mayor John Witherspoon on January 9th; instead it became an ordinance effective February 6th which provided that “New Castle be governed by an ordinance passed by a majority of its citizens at their next general election”. The first mayor of Indianapolis was James Hays who held office from November 3rd, 1850 – March 24th, 1851 before being replaced by John Witherspoon who held office from April 3rd through September 28th1851

New Castle is a city in Delaware County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,387 at the 2010 census. New Castle is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern bank of the White River and includes most of central and southern Delaware County. The area that would become New Castle was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1799, a group of traders from Philadelphia arrived in what is now Delaware County and founded the town of Wilmington on the banks of the White River. The town quickly grew into an important transportation hub due to its location on two main routes connecting Philadelphia with other parts of Indiana and Ohio. The town's success led to annexation by Indianapolis in 1825, becoming one of Indy's first incorporated cities. The economy boon brought about by early industrialization helped support a rapid growth in New Castle throughout the 19th century. The city reached its peak popularity during World War II when it became one of America's largest wartime production centers for munitions manufacturing; however, following the war, New Castle began to experience significant decline as factories closed and jobs were lost among its residents. However, some new businesses emerged during this time such as health care provider Sage Health System and several large retail stores which helped revive downtown business districts aroundtown while also creating new opportunities for resident employment outsideof traditional industries. In recent years, redevelopment efforts have been underway to revitalize key downtown areas including Old City Square/Gateway Park (a redevelopment project initiated in 2007) as well as Lower Town along Canal Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South which has seen increased activity recently due to job creation associated with several major development projects announced within walking distance thereof including Checkerboard Row developments adjacent thereto known collectively as "Innovation District" - a mix-use development anchored by two large office towers totaling over 500,000 square feet (46 football fields wide) -[1][2] comprehensive changes are ongoing at each locale that should result in continued vitality for both neighborhoods through complementary shoppingmall anchors (iPad Mini Stores), restaurants (Several locally owned craft breweries already exist), arts & entertainment options (including multiple theater complexes just steps away from downtown), nightlife programming (many bars open until 3am or later), public health services offered free OFWL clinics located near various medical facilities [-] all this without ever developing any contiguous Downtown district or even having annexed much surrounding land hitherto! What follows are brief summaries not intended to provide more than general overviews since there exists so much elseto explore about this fascinating community – including numerous historical events which took place here; people who lived here during different periods; architecture and engineering firms that built many famous sites within our city limits; etc.; etc…. The history behind Newark/New Castle begins with pre-historic times when native nations such asthe Potawatomi occupied lands around what is now Newark/Newcastle Township beginning around 1000 BC according to archeological evidence discovered at nearby Fort DeKalb National Monument.. It wasn’t until 1799 when European settlers started arriving in what is today DelawareCounty after traveling downriver via Philadelphia.[3] At first they were traders looking for profits but soon they started making real money farming maize crops which allowed them to start their own families.[4] By 1800 most Europeans had left except for a few hundred men who labored on farms outside Newark proper while others managed trading posts along the riverfront where goods were unloaded onto boats before being taken upstream across rapids where they would be sold off again back downstream….. those who stayed gradually assimilated into local culture over time………..[5][6][7][8] Some early Dutch settlers also arrived but most withdrew after their colony failed because they found no fertile land available…. Afterward Englishmen took up residence starting out with John Nicholson who established himself near present-day Lucasville [(9)] but he too abandoned his outpost after discovering no suitable land nearby….. General Edward Braddock then arrived with 7200 troops intent upon driving THE HISTORY OUT OF INDIANA [10]. He successfully fought against Native American forces leading him ultimatelyTo win fame as “Braddock” rather than “Intelligence Gathering Officer No 1” so he could go home….. However his troopers didn’t stay long enough so he had 2 companies march back upriver onlyTo begin another campaign against these same natives 10 days later…. This battle resulted In About 350 British fatalities plus 400+Indians killed…………… eventually Braddock’s army retreated back upriver under cover Of darkness leaving 300+British dead On THE NEAREST RIVERPORT…………… Little did anyone know that THIS IS WHERE WE NOW STAND! .....This event happened on July 4th 1775!!!!![11] So we can say without question that Newark played an enormous role During George Washington’s military campaigns Against Native Americans……../ For centuries thereafter it wasDEFINITELY ONE OF INDYANAGHOSTRAINTOWN HISTORY LEADERS!!!!!![] Although access To Indian Country WasrestrictedTO MANY CITIZENS thruOUT MUCH OF OUR LATE INDIRECTORY,[12], practically everyone living eastOf Market StreetRESIDED HERE UP TO AND INCLUDING AMERICAN HEROES LIKE JOHN FOUNDATION DIRECTOR BENJAMIN Franklin DSO., PRESIDENT James KELLY,...etc… As!!"
The New Castle area in central Indiana was first settled by the Potawatomi people in the early 1800s. The area became part of the United States after its purchase from France in 1803. The town of New Castle was founded on the site of present-day New Castle, Indiana, on December 3, 1814. In 1815, President James K. Polk designated the town as a center for trade with Great Britain and other countries. In 1865, New Castle became a city and continued to serve as its primary commercial center until its incorporation into the City of Indianapolis on November 1, 1886.
