In March 1830, General David Dixon decided that since he had no children or other living relatives inIndiana anymore he would sell his landsincluding portionsof present day Indianapolisto Secretary William H. Seward for $1 million dollars (). Seward immediately began construction on what would become one of America's largest public works projects - creating an overland route from Detroit via Kentucky and Tennessee to provide transportation for goods coming into establisha national market for farm products fresh off the American continent (). On November 15, 1830, New Castle became an independent township under control of Governor James Kossuth with Wm Doolittle as its first mayor ()

On July 1, 2010, the city of Carmel moved to its present location within Johnson County and became a part of the new Hamilton–Newcastle Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Castle were French traders in 1699-1800. In 1763 General George Rogers Clark's army made an attempt to cross the great river at Carrickfergus and reached Fort Stroud near where today's New Castle sits. Crawford's Expedition had been sent by Congress to explore this area but they did not find any valuable resources or trading opportunities so they abandoned their expedition after only two weeks when they learned that someone else had found them out and discovered oil reserves on nearby Indy Creek! In 1814 British Colonel John Gregg established a military post at Fort Delaware (now known as Old Fort Delaware) on high ground east of today's town limits while waiting for reinforcements from General Henry Dearborn's army under Major General David Dixon who had come downriver from Vincennes with more than 20 cannon. The fort served as an artillery depot and storage facility until it was destroyed by a storm in 1815 which also destroyed much of Indian Territory north of the Great Lakes including parts of what is now Carmel County! At about this time local farmers began moving into what are now New Castle and other areas around Fort Delaware because there were no good farming land available anywhere else in central Johnson County! It wasn't until after the American Revolution that advances were made in agriculture which led to increased demand for farmland throughout Indiana so improvements such as irrigation systems were put into place which continues to be beneficial today! On October 10th 1814 Councilman James Dolan laid out streets grid patterned along present day routes 2nd Street South & 3rd Street North between Market & Washington Streets with lots measured one acre each with houses being built starting immediately following clearance; lots continued to be sold subject only to conditions set forth by Councilman Dolan such as width required for passage through deep ditches fronting streams/rivers etc.; building proceeded rapidly due largely due to workforce supplied by father-in-law James Hickey who owned several hundred acres adjoining market square; initial buildings consisted simply of logs huts used for office/farmstead purposes before later addition of frame buildings; during early years many residents self-provided food & clothing; business opportunity attracted people seeking improved transportation access via riverside car ferry across lower Great Miami River then overland wagon route connecting these villages
