New Castle is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 2,381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become New Castle was Nicholas Sacco and his family who arrived in 1814 from Naples, Italy. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 9 near present-day Center Square. In 1827, they erected a larger cabin on land that today makes up most of blocks 1-5 of Central Park across from Main Street Elementary School. In 1829, Nathaniel Peebles arrived with his family and set up shop along what is now State Road 9 west of Central Square; he named it Peeblesville after himself and his father-in-law, Colonel Elijah Peebles (1788–1848). The town began to grow rapidly due to its easy access to water supplies and good soil for agriculture – including mills built by early settlers such as John Witherspoon (1776–1851) and Ebenezer Cobb (1800–85). By 1830, New Castle had over 30 citizens and two churches: one Congregationalist (later First Presbyterian) church and one Baptist church built by Rev. William King Sr.. In 1832, New Castle became an independent city through an act passed by the Indiana General Assembly; it was unincorporated territory until 1840 when it became part of Terre Haute Township when that township was created from parts of Hammond Township and Newton Township.. The growth of New Castle led to its incorporation as a municipality on April 12, 1907 by an act passed by the Indiana Legislature; it remained an unincorporated municipality until becoming a full municipality on October 15th 1984 pursuant to an act entitled "An Act To Create A Municipal Corporation And To Preserve Its Rights And Powers". At its incorporation ceremony held at City Hall in downtown New Castle*, Mayor Edward Jantz officiated – also presiding over ceremonies held for village presidents Tom Doherty (1908–10), Dan Sweeney* (1920), Harry Hargrave* (1922), Floyd Ladd* (1924), Franklin D’Angelo*(1928), Maurice Green *(October 15th 1984) – all men then serving term terms ending no later than November 3rd 1958*. New Castle, Indiana was founded in 1715 by George Washington as a trading post on the Wea River. The post was renamed New Castle in 1752 after the British burned it to the ground during the French and Indian War. In 1814, following the Mexican-American War, New Castle became a U.S. military base after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army invaded Indiana Territory. The original fortification of New Castle consisted of three walls with bastions each extending down into Ten Mile Creek which served as an obstacle against Indian attacks. After Santa Anna's defeat at Buena Vista on October 16, 1814, New Castle fell to Mexican forces and was abandoned soon afterward. New Castle resumed its role as a trading post until 1827 when it was moved to what is now downtown Indianapolis. It remained here until it was destroyed by fire in 1856 while being used as a storage depot for cornmeal futures contracts developed by John Pemberton & Company of Chicago. The site has since been redeveloped into business districts including Downtown Indianapolis and Noblesville.
