In 1951, Delaware County merged with nearby Union Township to form new Delaware County again. In 1970, Bethlehem Steel Corporation moved its headquarters from Gary, Indiana to New Castle after being acquired by Massey Energy Company. At that time, Bethlehem Steel employed over 200 people at their plant alone; today only about 10 remain jobs away from closure thanks largely to retirements among older workers and a decrease in demand for steel products overall across America due mainly to economic recession throughout much of 2009-2011%. As Bethlehem Steel vacated their facility they left behind an approximately $10 million investment which has yetto be fully realized as company finances have been tight ever since; now discussions are underway regarding redevelopment or even demolition (sources indicate this may not be imminent).
