In 1814, New Castle became part of the United States after Napoleon's invasion of America. The town declined during Reconstruction but regained some prosperity under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs. In recent years, New Castle has been struggling to maintain its population and infrastructure; its only major industry is tourism.
