He named his settlement "Newcastle" after his hometown of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England where he had been born some years earlier. The first schoolhouse was built here in 1705 by Rev. James Nicholson who served as pastor at this location for several years before moving to nearby Hammondsville to start his own congregation there. By 1710 or 1711 when Kentucky Company officials arrived with their surveyor map that depicted new lands west of Fort Wayne along present day I-465/US 12 (the future site of Notre Dame University), Pike had petitioned authorities for land east of Fort Wayne – land that today includes much of downtown Indianapolis! In 1802 Union troops burned down most all but one building within what became known as "The Block" which housed shops on First National Bank Avenue between Broadway and Washington Streets NW (). A few weeks later General John Custer attackedand destroyedIndian encampment northeast of town near present day Meridian Mall just outsidepresent dayDelaware County limits while seeking information about possible Indian resistance against Ulysses S Grant’s large army besieging Fort Dearborn (). This event helped spur development around Meridian Mall which began soon thereafter with construction beginning on what would become known as Meridian Place – now known primarily for its shopping mall complex located thereabouts today (). On July 1st 1816 William & Mary College opened its doors at what are now Penn Plaza (formerly Main & State Streets)NW corner Market Street SEin frontofthe then newly developed courthouse complex constructed next door by citizens soon afterwards (!?) After serving students from Georgetown College until it merged with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) campus adjacent to Penn Plaza during 1954/1955 renovations under then Mayor Edward Doherty., William & Mary continued operations adjacent Penn Plaza until 1972 when it relocated across Pennsylvania Avenue from Downtown Indy onto today’s main thoroughfare opposite MCC Campus - leaving only学院 remains standing on Campus currently occupied by IUPUI “Wings” business incubation space following W&M closure during 2006 renovation campaign led by then CEO Jeff Swensen !!
