New Albany, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of New Albany County. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The name "New Albany" was chosen in honor of General Anthony Wayne, who fought against Native Americans in what is now Ohio andIndiana during the American Revolutionary War. The town was founded in 1814 as a trading center on the Wabash River between Fort Dearborn and Fort Pitts Blockhouse. In 1835, it became an independent city when it annexed parts of Corydon Township and removed most of its citizens to create a new city government with more autonomy from Indianapolis. New Albany functioned as an agricultural center until World War II when industrial growth transformed it into one of America's largest manufacturing cities with major companies such as Boeing, Carrier Corporation, Beechcraft Airplanes, and Hendrickson Electric Power Company locating there. In recent decades however, New Albany has experienced significant decline due to economic factors such as declines in manufacturing jobs and suburban development around it; however some revival projects have been undertaken including plans for a new government plaza near downtown that would include office space for businesses along with cultural programming; mixed-use redevelopment adjacent to Interstate 70 called "Stadium City"; and construction of a $100 million revitalization project centered around riverfront properties north of I-70 known as "Rising Star". Today, New Albany retains many vestiges from its past - including several churches dating back to 1798 (the first church built in this area), a State Capitol Complex completed in 1865 which includes underground passages connecting two different wings of the capitol building (and still used today), extensive brick architecture typical among early American cities (including many public buildings inside or near downtown), plus numerous street namesakes rooted in local history like Mohawk Street ( honoring Iroquois Chief John Mahony) or Pinto Street ( honoring Spanish explorer Hernando Pérez de la Vega). In 1814, when traders from Illinois began to arrive in large numbers in central Indiana, some of them looking for land to settle, several Potawatomi chiefs decided to move their people westward into what is now east-central Indiana to take advantage of what they saw as an opportunity. In 1820, General James Kapp set out from Fort Dearborn with a small force of Ulysses S. Grant’s United States Cavalry to explore and survey the region around New Albany. Heading north along present day I-70 he passed through what is now easternmost New Albany on his way back downriver to Fort Dearborn. On July 10, 1821, Kapp's forces found and destroyed a Shawnee camp at Forts Harrison and Knox near modern day Terre Haute (now Lafayette). This event signaled the beginning of an intermittent conflict between Native Americans and white settlers which would continue until after World War II. Although at first operations at New Albany were conducted chiefly through bartering or raiding raids against neighboring tribes, by 1830 official trade relations had been established with three major Indian nations: The Shawnees (whose villages lay just east of wherepresentday New Albany was situated), Pottawatomies (to the south), and Hoosiers (to the west). For many years thereafter this triangular trade relationship functioned like an open market economy; goods exchanged among these three nations varied greatly but always within limits prescribed by treaty agreements or other agreements between investors and natives
