In 1875, New Albany was founded by De Witt Clinton. The city is located on the banks of the River Indiana and is home to a variety of businesses, including an international banking company, a flour mill, and a cheese factory. In addition to its business opportunities, New Albany also became known for its astronomy center. A building on State Street that served as the city's observatory was built in 1892. The observatory closed in 1951 but remains significant in the history of scopes in New Albany. The first scopes used for astronomical observation were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Matthieu Pigasse. Conte developed a design for an astrolabe that he submitted to Jean-Baptiste Colbert in 1784. The Colbert National Observatory used this device to make observations during the French Revolution. During World War II, American military personnel stationed in Europe brought telescopes back to America before they were destroyed or lost during the war. These scopes were used by astronomers at US Naval Observatory Greenwich (later US Department of Commerce) and then at US Air Force Academy (later NASA). New Albany is located on the confluence of the White River and the Alleghanies River. The first post office for New Albany was established on July 8, 1827. The name was changed to New Albany in 1851 after it became an independent town. The first settlers were James Hines and his family from Ohio who arrived in 1827. In 1830 Isaac Smith moved to New Albany from Terre Haute, Indiana and began farming there. By 1840 John Cline also had settled in New Albany and began growing corn and other crops while also trading goods with other communities in what is now Butler County. The first school in New Albany was built on May 24, 1830 by George Wyleighs with money taken from Peter Wilkinson during a tax assessment for that year’s school fund. This three-room log building served as a school until September 3rd of that year when it burned down due to bad weather conditions. A new four-room brick schoolhouse was completed by December 5th and served as the primary educational facility for students until 1861 when a new high school was constructed adjacent to present day Main Street which included more classrooms than ever before! In 1865 Anthony Jourdan opened what would become one of America’s most popular hotels/motels called “The Best Western Hotel & Motel” at 219 Main Street which he operated successfully until its closure in 1984 following numerous fires over many years including one that destroyed much of the original building! In 1902 Drury Pinchot purchased land adjoining what is now State Road 522 east of present day Main Street where he founded Pinchot Brothers Paper Mill (renamed Brown Paper Company later) becoming one of America’s largest paper manufacturers! Today portions of this property still bear evidence of his early industrial development including an old water tower reminiscent of those used by Early American Paper Manufacturers! When prohibition took effect on April 17th1920alcohol become illegal throughout America henceforth known as Prohibition Day !! As such all sorts of businesses belonging to both legal ANDillegal alcohol suppliers went out OF BUSINESS !! Many people view this period as being particularly difficult as so many jobs were lost resultant innocent people losing their homes!! Many fine citizens took up arms against Prohibition making themselves targets not only by criminals but also law enforcement!!!! One can only imagine how difficult it must have been living day-to-day knowing that your entire community could be destroyed just like THAT!!! In recent decades considerable progress has been made regarding Alcohol Abuse Resistance Education or “AARE” programs which provide help/support within our local communities towards preventing such tragedies!!
