New Albany is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,917 at the 2010 census. The settlement started as a log cabin on an Indian hunting ground in what is now Vanderburgh County on November 3, 1786 by three men from Kentucky: John Cook, David Wilkinson and James McNairy. The first permanent settler arrived in 1801 when General Isaac Brock set up his military post at Logstown (now part of Interlaken), about 12 miles north of New Albany. He attracted many farmers with his land grants and prospered until 1814 when he sold all his land except for a small piece near present day Lafayette where he built a stockade to protect himself from British forces who were invading America at that time. Brock's successors continued to attract settlers until about 1840 when most farming became obsolete due to increased rail travel through this area making it more difficult to bring goods back and trade goods with Europe which had still been closed off by warring countries centuries earlier. The last major influx of migrants into this area came during World War II when many people fleeing Hungary decided to cross the river into America rather than go through Nazi-occupied Hungary while they could still do so since passage across the Tiber was not easy or safe even for those who managed it; however, all but perhaps 100 or so people made it across safely before war began and many more perished trying crossing again weeks later once Germany had taken over Budapest). As early as 1816 there were plans for traveling wagons downriver past Fort Wayne on what became known as "the Road From Hell."
