In 1836, Lucius Prentice opened a clothing store at 3rd and Jefferson Streets which became known as "The New City Clothing Store". Joe Brownell started selling eggs at 5th and Dearborn Streets in 1861 which became known as "Eggnology Hall" because it was where farmers came to buy eggs during their season. In 1865, Wm. Henson reopened his bakery shop at 1st and Dearborn Streets which became known as The Old White House Bakery Shop. In 1886, Isaac Weise reopened his dry goods store at 2nd and Dearborn Streets which became known as The New White House Diner Shopping Mall. By 1912 there were five stores open in town: The Old White House Bakery Shop; The New Whitehouse Diner Shopping Mall; Joe Brownell's Eggs; Wm Henson's Bakery Shop; Isaac Weise's Dry Goods Store. By 1938 there were ten stores open in town: The Old White House Bakery Shop; The New Whitehouse Diner Shopping Mall; Joe Brownell's Eggs; Wm Henson's BakeryShop; Isaac Weise's Dry Goods Store; Boardwalk Cafe (later Joes); Boardwalk Inn (later Embassy Suites); Lighthouse Tavern (later Applebees); Grandview Theater (now Regal Cinemas). When World War II began in 1939 there were only three stores open: Joe Brownell’s Eggs;; Wm Henson’s BakeryShop;; Isaac Weise’s Dry Goodsstore.; Lighthouse Tavern.(later Applebees); Boardwalk Cafe( later Joes); Boardwalk Inn( later Embassy Suites). With war coming closer daily merchants had less time to sell their products so they closed down or merged into other businesses including: Grandview Theater(now Regal Cinemas) when it got destroyed by fire in 1945-1946 ; Lighthouse Tavern(now Regal Cinemas) when owner lost interest & sold it to movie theater chain Red Lion who moved it across state line to Evansville Indiana ; Boardwalk Cafe( now American Legion Post #508) when post bought building next door for $2 million ;[1] all but one restaurant went out of business before being replaced by new buildings such as American Legion Post #508 – Regal Cinemas after Eidolon executive bought post .
