By 1848, gun rights had become an important issue in the community. A group of men called the “New Albany Riflemen” formed to protect citizens with firearms. The American Civil War began in 1861 and soon violence erupted between Unionists and Confederate sympathizers throughout Indiana and Ohio River Valley areas including New Albany County. Gunfights occurred all over the area as pro-Confederate forces tried to seize arms from Unionists or loot supplies brought into enemy territory by Union forces. In 1865, after months of hard fighting, General Ulysses S Grant finally won the war at Appomattox Court House in Virginia - ending Reconstruction in America which had been ongoing since1865. As a result of this victory, many black Americans who had fought for the Confederacy were pardoned or given amnesty by President Ulysses S Grant - including New Albany native James Fenton Radcliffe (1821-1900). Today, New Albany is one of central Indiana's most vibrant cultural communities with a rich history dating back more than 350 years.
