New Albany is a small town in the western portion of the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the banks of the Seven Rivers River. The population was 1,809 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. New Albany is one of several Native American word settlements in what would become Indiana during its early history as a British colony. The first English settlers in what would become New Albany were two men, Robert Dutcher and William Caldwell, who arrived on October 24, 1685 from England with their families. They built a log cabin on the side of a hill overlooking present day downtown New Albany. This was the beginning of what would be called "Dutcher's Town". The first permanent settler in what would become New Albany was John Pritchard who arrived in 1711 along with his family and began trading goods with local Indians. He also founded a church and school which still stands to this day in downtown New Albany. In 1792, Daniel Boone moved to central Indiana from Kentucky and established himself at Fort Stroudsburg near present day Terre Haute after being successful in penetrating Indian country for hunting and raiding new sources of food supplies. In search of new land to settle and exploit resources, he founded Roanoke County (now parts of north-central Ohio) northeast of where he had settled earlier that year in what is now Delaware County about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of modern-day Indianapolis when he became acquainted with Chief Pontiac's band led by Anthony Wayne during Apache Wars campaign against Mexico (). Boone named his new county after himself because it seemed like an ideal place to build a fortification: 'New Albemarle' (related to nearby Virginia). Some throwback accounts claim that Boone may have chosen Williamson County – then known as part-of-Indiana due to its location midway between Kentucky and Pennsylvania – because it was free from Indian attacks or because his wife had been born thereabouts but died shortly afterwards while pregnant ().
