New Albany, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state ofIndiana and the county seat ofFayette County. The population was 7,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. New Albany was founded in 1814 by Potawatomi Indians as a trading post on the Ohio River opposite present day Lafayette, Indiana. The first white settlers arrived in New Albany in 1816 and by 1820 it had become a town with a courthouse and jail. In 1830, General James Wilkinson built Fort Dearborn to protect against Native Americans who were trying to enter what is now Fayette County through its territory. The fort served as an important base for Indian Wars until it was abandoned in 1840 after being used only for ammunition storage rather than for defense. In 1853, New Albany became one of thirteen townships that formed Tyler Township under the direction of Governor Thomas Tappan Sr.. In 1865, Tyler Township split off from Fayette County and became its own independent municipality which still operates today as New Albany Township
New Albany was founded by a group of Moravians in 1795. It became an important center for agricultural production and served as the county seat from 1825 to 1851. New Albany was also the site of the first general election in Indiana.
