Today New Albany remains a vibrant community with strong ties to its cultural heritage while also creating opportunities for both local employment and vacation rentals throughout its neighborhoods which offer stunning views of downtown Indianapolis skyline without having to leave your backyard!
New Albany was founded in 1814 by John Wilkinson as a post office on the east side of the Big Four River. It was renamed New Albany in 1847 after the city of Albany, New York. The population of New Albany peaked at 10,000 in 1850 and declined to 7,500 by 1860. The town began to decline rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s as a result of its limited access to resources and its location near Logansport, Indiana. Its population decreased to 1,000 by 1890.
