Munster is a town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. Munster was founded in 1838 by Nicholas and Anna (Foley) Munster. The first store in town was built on the corner of Main and State Streets. The town's first post office opened in 1840. In 1851, the county seat was moved from Crawfordsville to Munster because of overcrowding at its previous location. In 1852, the first school was built in town; it served grades one through five until 1954 when it closed because of lack of funding. In 1862, an important battle took place near Munster during the American Civil War; Union General John Totten's army defeated Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's force there with help from local militia forces. In 1870, Munster became a municipality which allowed for more than one family to live together on one property within a certain limits without fear of eviction or loss of property rights if they left their home for any reason other than moving out- this led to many new businesses being established such as grocery stores and cotton textile mills opening up shop hereabouts. A new railroad line called the Chicago and Northwestern Railway arrived here in 1887 which helped bring jobs and development to downtown Munster while also helping fuel social tensions that had been simmering since before that time between native Indian residents who were farmers and stock market speculators/ financiers who were also indigenous to Indiana but had come down south via Ohio River boats looking for land where they could build plantations – what we now call "Indiana Territory" – while white settlers were trying to establish themselves as a permanent presence both politically and economically among these aboriginal populations by building homes, constructing churches etc., all while Suppressing Native Resistance movements like Chief Joseph's band known formally as "The Shawnee Nation" which functioned autonomously until around 1830 when British military aggression caused them suddenly 500 miles eastward along Ioway Creek effectively splitting their traditional homeland into two halves due to overpopulation/ soil depletion issues related primarily to Enclosure policies implemented by European colonists & traders Resulting not only mass starvation & displacement but also genocide against their people starting around 1750-1760 under orders from Great Britain prior thereto culminating with final executioner’s sentence carried out some 35 years later resulting in death throes & ultimate extinction or forced migration most notably during Pontiac’s Rebellion Munster has experienced growth throughout its history including annexations by neighboring townships (1958), reductions in population due largely to World War II relocation programs (1948-1952), annexation by Johnson County (1991), withdrawal from Johnson County following incorporation into Carmel Township (2002), merger with Carmel Township (2007) Bordering communities: Noblesburg - 15 miles north Crawfordsville - 16 miles south Davenport - 20 miles west Independence - 25 miles east

After World War I, the Durbin family ran it as a grocery and feedstore until it was purchased by John Fink in 1923. Fink developed it into an upscale shopping center that includes a number of stores, restaurants, and offices. Munster is a city in and the county seat of Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Hendricks County by population. Munster was founded in 1824 as a village on the east bank of the White River. The first post office for Munster was established in 1827. In 1839, the town became a full-fledged village when it incorporated as such. The first school was opened in 1852 and served grades one through six. A courthouse and jail were erected in 1860 and 1861 respectively. In 1907, Munster annexed both sides of what is now downtown to become its own municipally owned park which still functions today as a public square called "The Square". In 1928, the old Muscatine & Sioux City Railroad line from Muscatine to Sioux City was acquired by the Indiana State Road Commission and converted into an all-weather road named "Munster Boulevard". A new hospital was built adjacent to that highway interchange in 1950 which became known as Stritch Regional Medical Center until its sale to Adventist Health System in 2002. Stritch Regional Medical Center merged with Notre Dame Healthcare System (NDHS) to form Notre Dame Health Care Corporation (NHC) on October 1, 2013 following separate bankruptcy filings by each company separately two years earlier. NHC will continue to operate as both NDHS Stritch Regional Medical Center campuses with their original name but will be managed under one umbrella under management from NDHS' Indianapolis headquarters campus until something better occurs; however this appears unlikely given current trends within health care organizations across North America where consolidation has occurred at an alarming rate recently although there are some notable exceptions including Lahey HealthSystem who have chosen not to consolidate).
