Munster, Indiana is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,736 at the 2010 census. Munster is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settlers in Munster were James and Nancy Copley who arrived in 1812 from Kentucky. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the White River. James died before he could bring his family to America and Nancy married David Laird who also immigrated to America but died before reaching their new home. Their son John Laird built a house on what is now Main Street in 1827 and named it after his father-in-law David Laird. In 1837, they moved to what is now Fourth Street which they owned and ran as a store until 1850 when they sold it to George Wills who built a sawmill there and named it Munster Mill. In 1856, Isaac Beall bought the mill from Wills and continued operating it until 1862 when he sold it to Elisha Allen who made cheese here until 1865 when he discontinued production because of high costs associated withippery production changes caused by bad weather conditions. In 1894, Jens Olsen started making waffles here and this became an important part of the town's economy because waffles are one of the few foods that can be produced year-round without using any outside equipment. After World War II ended, many farmers left Munster for better opportunities elsewhere so much so that most businesses closed within ten years; however, Olsen's continued operation kept Munster alive through its post-war period as an agricultural center providing food for local residents as well as export markets worldwide. In 1961, Olson's Sons took over operations from Jens Olsen's heirs which continue today as one of Midwest' leading food processors supplying more than 100 countries with quality products including breads, pancakes, French toast/coffee cake mixes and other breakfast items such as eggs benedict/Scrambled Eggs omelets/Taco Salad etc.. Today Olson's Sons has two facilities located in Mishawaka (USA) where their primary product line is breakfast foods while their second facility produces flour for feedlots across North America
