Munster, Indiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 43,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Putnam County and home to Munster High School and other educational institutions. In 1847, Munster became an incorporated town when it was annexed by neighboring Decatur Township; however, it never gained full city status until 1912 when it was reincorporated as a city following approval from the state legislature under then-Mayor John Dyer (). Munster has experienced significant growth throughout its history: In 1960 its population had only 397 residents; by 2000 it had more than 2,000 inhabitants and continues to grow rapidly today (2010 census). Munster is an incorporated city in the Muncie, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western bank of the River Munster and forms a part of the larger downtown area. The first settlers in what is now Munster were white traders who arrived in 1795 and named it after their birthplace, Nantes, France. The town started off as a small community of about fifty people and soon grew to over two hundred. In 1825, John Marshall moved his family to Munster from nearby Brainerd and set up a grocery store there which became one of the most successful in that region. By 1830, however, many residents had left for new opportunities in Ohio or Illinois due to hard times following the Panic of 1829. In 1834-35, Judge James Dyer organized a group of men called "The Pioneers" which aimed to settle land grants bestowed by President Andrew Jackson on Creek Nation members who had helped him win election as president. The group began construction on what would become known as Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and laid out six townships: New Lisbon (later City), Lafayette (later Townsite), Decatur (later Village), Durant (later Township), Miami (now Point Lookout), and Muscatine (now Clinton). On July 8, 1836, they voted to change their name from "The Pioneers" to "Munster." During the 1840s various stores operated along Main Street including Gourley's Store which became well-known for its cigars; Hickey's Grocery later added canned goods to its line; Ford & Sons Hardware House occupied this space until 1906 when it closed down due to financial difficulties; Smith Bros., Butcher Shop opened in1857 near where current US High School stands; Pillsbury Mill produced flour for local markets until it stopped operating around 1915; Hendrickson Piano Business opened here in 1865 before closing down several years later; also during this time period local schools included Stroud Institute School - now defunct -and Dunlap Academy School - now open - all designed by noted Indianapolis architect Ebenezer Harding. Some other notable businesses during this time include Peebles' Bank which served as a dry goods store between 1850-60 while also dealing in slaves ; Griggs Coal Works built an early brick plant north of town starting production in 1850-51 ; Dayton Iron Works increased production at their brick plant beginning around 1860 while also producing cannons for American forces during World War II ; First National Bank building constructed east side of town between 1860-70 while also doing business as First National Bank Of Munster building until 1968 when it burned down ; Ambrose Grain Elevator built west side of town between 1870-76 with plans for expanding intoanol making but never did so because competition from better performing mills); finally Aiken & Sons Insurance Company building erected east side of town south/west of present day riverfront late 1800s with plans for becoming one of Indy's first insurance companies but never actually did so because development growth elsewhere thwarted those plans
