Munster, Indiana is located in the central United States and was named for the Munster Land Grant which was given to John C. Munster in 1837. The town began as a small community near the site of present-day Munster on December 12, 1838, when thirteen settlers set out from Yorkville, Illinois on horseback. They arrived atpresent-day Munster on December 16th. The town grew rapidly due to its location by the Erie Canal and its proximity to other settlements along the canal. By 1853, munster had a population of over 500 people and it became an incorporated city on January 1st of that year. On November 30th, 1861, during the American Civil War, munsterspecial forces assisted inthe Battle of Liberty National Park and were responsible for capturing Confederate General JF McClernand within two hours of his defeat at Fort Donelson. After the war ended, munterspecialforces disbanded and most residents withdrew to their homes until 1870 when an act was passed providing for township government with a mayor/council system. In 1905, munster again became an incorporated city after approval by the state legislature; however this occurred too late to make much impact on local culture or history. Munster experienced significant growth following World War II as a result of both its strategic importance as a military installation and its role as a manufacturing center for goods exported across Lake Michigan. Municipal services such as water supplies and trash collection were provided by independent companies until 1972 when all municipal services were consolidated under one organization called "City Services."
