In 1824, John Davenport founded a newtown on the west bank of the river near present day White Street and Main Avenue; this settlement later became known as Munster proper. In 1827, David Dixon donated land overlooking today's downtown for an academy; this institution continues to operate today as Purdue University–Indiana's largest campus outside Chicago/Milwaukee/Waukesha County (the others being Indiana State University Bloomington in Bloomington and IUPUI in Indianapolis). In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of America following his successful run for office as a Republican against Ulysses S Grant, Munster residents helped build Union army barracks along with other towns across central Indiana that same year; these barracks served until 1971 when they were replaced by facilities at Fort Wayne International Airport south of downtown. One local historian has written that "municipal patriotism" led many people "to contribute their quota" towards helping create one of America's most important military installations—an event that also helped promote growth in downtown Munsterville throughout those years." In 1865-1867 two miles north of where it currently stands sits what is now Purdue University–Indiana's largest campus outside Chicago/Milwaukee/Waukesha County - making it one of only two universities established within civilian boundaries during American Civil War era (the other being Ohio State University) Afterward both cities quickly declined due to lack or need for jobs closeby while prices escalated rapidly leading some businessmen out-of-town looking for cheaper areas to locate businesses etc.; however still staple industries supporting munsters economy continued such as agriculture up until about 1970s but then went into decline with increasing competition from more affordable stateside locations etc.; however much like Kokomo & Westville prior thereto industry strengths have been revived recently resurgent agriculturally based enterprises include: winery & cheese production surpassing locally made products by 2013 according to latest data visitor count google maps
