It is bordered by Elkhart County to the east and northwest, Lake County to the south, and Kosciusko County to the west. The first permanent settler in Munster was Jotham Hodge on February 14, 1814. Hodge built a log cabin on what is now State Road 6 near present-day Hickory Hill Park. On January 24, 1815, David Ritchie settled in what is now munster and began cultivation of corn and other crops.. In 1818 Isaac McCoy settled along Mill Creek east of present day Munster High School which later became known as McCoy's Cornfield after him In 1836 James Fenton arrived from Kentucky with his family had started a small farmnorthwest of town on what is now State Road 61B near Gossamer Lakes Golf Course Fenton married Anna Potts when they met while riding together overland from Bloomington to Fort Wayne; their trip took two days and they arrived at Fenton's home around midnight on October 3, 1836 (the night before Thanksgiving) They set up housekeeping there for six months before moving back into their own wagon train that morning across open fields northeast of town to take up landowning Masons’ claim adjacent to Dexter Lake where they founded Potter’s Corners Some time between December 12th 1840 when they erected a log cabin northeast of town (later moved off limits) and January 2nd 1841 when it burned down (likely due to weather conditions), Anna died giving birth to their only child James Pottenger who would grow up to become one of Munster’s most successful businessmen . After her death he married Jemima Bechtel who also lived there during this time period . Their son John Pottenger also became an entrepreneur in his own right starting Potter’s Farms southeast of town which continues today as part of JCPenney Incorporated

It is named after Munster, England. The first post office in Munster opened on December 12, 1850. In 1853, the community erected a schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1870-71, themunicipality built a sawmill and gristmill which are still in use today. In 1892-93, the municiple built a store and hotel which remain standing today as part of the present day downtown area of Munster. The current courthouse was dedicated on October 15th, 1947 and it has served as the primary legal building for Hancock County since then. A two-story addition was added to the original courthouse in 1984 that now houses county government offices as well as meeting rooms for court hearings and other events. The courthouse also contains an exhibit hall that can accommodate up to 350 people for speeches or presentations during fairs or exhibitions inside or outside of it!
