Munster is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1824 by Irish immigrants. The population was 2,633 at the 2010 census. Munster is the smallest community in Butler County and one of the youngest in the state. Munster is located on State Road 37 between Westville and Cairo. The ZIP code for Munster is 61615. The first known settlers to Munster were Patrick and Bridget O'Neill from Wexford, Ireland who arrived in 1824. They started a small lumber business and raised corn, potatoes, chickens and pigs on their farm which they named "O'Neill's Ridge." In 1830 John Ryan moved to Munster from Syria with his family; he had been born there about 1790. He built a log cabin on his land which became the nucleus of what would become Munster Township; it included present-day parts of Westville, Cairo and North Cairo while also including some land that now forms part of Monterrey Township. In 1834, Michael Brosnan settled in what would become Munster Township after moving from Waterford, Ireland two years earlier. Michael Brosnan operated a grocery store until 1852 when he built his own store on Main Street near the intersection of State Roads 37 and 34A (now Loop 375). At this time Businessman John Hickey bought Michael Brosnan's store shares but died without leaving any children to continue the business venture into adulthood – an event which has been commemorated annually by hosting a Hickeyfest celebration at Brosnan's store since then! After many years as a successful grocer & post office facility providing milk products & cigarettes for residents of both Westville & Monterrey Townships alike John Ahearn opened his own retail storefront adjacent to Brosnan's Store starting Jul 1st 1960 operating as Anhearn Hardware Inc., later Anhearn Hardware Co., until Feb 26th 1978 when it closed due to poor health following 25 years entrepreneurship! Today you can still find pieces of statue originally dedicated to John Ahearn inside Anhearn Hardware Co building!
