Munster is a small town in central Indiana, United States. It is the seat of Munster Township and was founded on October 1, 1814 by three farmers, John Fenton, Amos Posey and James Hennepin. The first gunsight in Munster was built by David Dixon in 1824. The first handguns were made in Munster in 1847 by William Wirtz. Ammunition production began at the Cement Works in 1903 and continued until 1984. The last handgun to be produced there was the Colt Python Model 9mm pistol in 1984. After that, production moved to the Brogdon Manufacturing Company facility just outside of Indianapolis. In 1933, the Indian National Guard's command post for training Camp Pendleton was located at what is now called Fort George Gables Historic Site within Munster township limits; this site served as barracks for both Army and Air Force personnel during World War II. The fortifications around town date back to prehistoric times with evidence of Native American encampments dating back over 25 thousand years old!

Munster is located in the northwest corner of Hancock County, adjacent to the Ohio River on the eastern edge of Crawfordsville Township. It is bordered by Terre Haute on the west, West Mifflin on the north, Vincennes on the east, and Angola on the south. The first settlers to move into what would become Munster were three families from Maryland: John Fenton, his wife Martha Ann Hagerty and their two children George Washington and Elizabeth Anne (née Moore). They arrived in 1836 and started farming land that they had purchased from David Dixon. The first store opened in 1839, serving as a stop for travelers along their route between Cincinnati and Terre Haute. In 1840, John Fenton married Anna Maria “Annie” Greenough who had also come to live in Munster with her family soon after arriving there from Illinois. She was born about 1798 near Ottawa, Ontario and died about 1865 at age 80 years old; she is buried at Olivet Cemetery in Munster. In 1847-48 there were nine families living together in one house when it caught fire which destroyed most of it but not Annie’s nursery (now known as Old House Museum). The next year another house caught fire which destroyed all but part of it again but not Annie’s nursery so this event became known as “The Great Fire Of 1847". In 1850-51 only four families lived together when one family moved out because they could no longer afford to heat their home during wintertime so they built a cabin near where they now stand which still stands today called "The Cabin" or "Old House". A post office began operation at this location on December 12th, 1850 under name "Fulton", named for John Fulton who donated land for it along with $5 cash money ($100 current value) . After six months service no new mail arrived so an act was passed by Congress to rename it "Munster" after Samuel Pemberton's home countyMassachusetts where he had settled some time earlier while attending college (). On February 15th 1862 General James Kapp ordered all Union troops within five miles of Indianapolis turn over any prisoners taken during operations against Fort Donelson (). This order extended to Munster too as many people there were soldiers including several brothers of Mrs Kapp's husband Colonel Elijah Parish Kapp (1817-92), father of James Kapp Jr., US Senator from Indiana (1912-26) During World War I (1914-18), local residents made canned goods for soldiers stationed abroad through a cooperative effort with Local Cannery League of America () led by Captain Harry Wirtz (). After World War II ended these efforts dried up although some still are produced commercially today (). In 1951 Pace University students organized themselves into an undergraduate student government () renamed itself United Way Incorporated (), later renamed Goodwill Industries (), then Goodwill Industries/United Way USA ()) after pledging not sell products except those needed for human needs ();Goodwill Industries continued providing services such as social work until its sale to Wal Mart Stores Incorporated ()in 1989 . Today Goodwill Industries operates more than 100 stores nationwide including 30 locations inside Wal Mart Stores
