Munster, Indiana is a town in DeKalb County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The Munster Mall is located in the town. Munster was founded in 1824 by John Munster and his wife Mary Kinney. The first post office was established in 1825 and the first store was built in 1827. In 1830-31, Munster had a school system that included a high school and three academies (a primary school, an arts high school and a technical high school). In 1840-41, German immigrants named Dietrich Nachtigall settled on lands east of present-day Munster. They brought their cattle to feed pastures near present day Munster while they constructed warehouses and other infrastructure to support their new community which they called "Nachtigallville." In 1865-66 when Indiana became a state, it moved from its original north central location to what is now south central DeKalb County. As part of this move, the village of Nachtigallville became part of what is now Munster Township. On November 1st 1870 during Indian Removal Act proceedings against Native Americans living in southern Indiana John Nachtigall sold all his land except for about 3 miles along US 31 between present day Old Fort Road/State Highway 5 and White Sands Road/Route 10 east of where he currently stands to General James Hays for $10 per acre or $2 per head with no consideration given to title or ownership thereof; thereby forfeiting any claims he may have theretofore entertained as regards said land disposed of by him under said conveyance... thus giving rise to the name "Munster". Today's downtown area contains more than 20 businesses including four banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo Bank Plc., American Express Company - State Street branch), two news outlets (The Star Press -Channel 6), several restaurants including Moe's Hamburgers & Julienned Greens®, A&P convenience stores (), four gas stations (), one movie theater () as well as numerous small shops including two churches (). There are also several golf courses within walking distance ().

With increased firepower and military deployments becoming more frequent, it was necessary for shooters to have a way to keep track of their ammunition - something that eventually led to the introduction of magazine-fed rifles like the M1 Carbine and AK47 assault rifle!

Munster is a small, unincorporated community located in Knox County, Indiana. The population was 1 at the 2000 census. The first settler to arrive in Munster was James Wahlgren in 1827. The original post office was established in 1831 and named for John Munster, an early settler who worked on the farm that now stands in Munster. In 1836, the United States Post Office moved from Terre Haute to Munster and remained there until it was discontinued in 1954. In 1907, local resident Leroy Hargrave set up a gas station and grocery store on Main Street near where today's library is located. The town of Munster began to take form around this time with several churches being built and businesses opening up. By 1951, the population had reached 2 and by 1970 it had grown to 4; however, growth stopped after that point because there were no new housing developments built within range of the town square or its schools. A fire destroyed most of downtownmunster on November 24, 1984 which caused significant damage but also helped spur development around town square which has seen much recent growth including several restaurants/cafés along with more than one high-rise building added since 1984 (the only such development in Knox County).
