The name comes from Munster County, which was one of the original counties formed in 1824 when Indiana became a state. Munster was originally called Tannery and Post Office. In 1837, it changed its name to Munster after John Munster, one of the early settlers in the area. The post office continued to be named Munster until it discontinued operations in 1865. The community took its current name from nearby Munsters Ford Dam which is also known as the first dam on the River Raisin. The dam was built by Major General George Armstrong Custer during his campaign for Ulysses S. Grant in 1868-69 and it remains a popular tourist destination today. The population of Munster is estimated at 508 people as of 2010 census figures. Most residents are engaged in agriculture or are employed within local businesses such as grain elevators and stores that operate along Interstate 20W between Indianapolis and Terre Haute. In 1836, when Kosciusko County became an Indiana county, Munster became a part of it. It remained so until November 3, 1907 when it moved to its present location within Crawfordsville-Westville School District. The original town site was on the west side of Crawfordsville Creek which flows through downtown and forms most of the township boundaries. Munster began as a modest log cabin community with just 10 residents in 1837. By 1840, there were over 50 people living hereabouts and by 1850 there were over 100 residents including some 23 men who operated a sawmill on the creek bank near what is now First Street (now Main Street). The community continued to thrive during the American Civil War because many soldiers came to stay with their families or took transient lodgings while they served their country; among these soldiers were several newspaper editors who lived and worked in Munster for several years before moving on to other parts of Indiana.
