Munster is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. Munster is located on the east side of the White River and about north of Moline. The land that would become Munster was first settled in 1836 by John Munster and his family as part of a larger engagement with Joseph Wahlquist and his party during the Black Hawk War. After Wahlquist's death, his brother-in-law, Jacob Hogue, took over management of what would become Munster Township. In 1847, David Rankin purchased land south of present-day Munster from Hogue for $8 per acre. Rankin named his township after him and set out to develop it into a farming community with two churches (the Old Mission Baptist Church and First Presbyterian) and twelve stores. By 1854, Rankin had built a large house on what is now Main Street which he called "Rankin's Mansion." In 1878 John Pappas bought some property adjacent to Rankin's farm for $10 per acre which he developed into Pappas Park. However, this development did not take off as planned due to low demand for goods produced by Pappas' farm operation and lack of transportation links to downtown Munster. In 1901 Milton Ladd bought Pappas Park from Pappas for $1 per acre; this gave rise to Laddville which housed the first grocery store in town within fifty years when it opened its doors on December 1, 1901. Munster experienced rapid growth during World War II following the entry into force of military rationing that began on January 1st 1942 and continued until war ended on September 2nd 1945. The post-war boom slowed down somewhat in the early 1950s as industries shifted away from agriculture into new businesses such as manufacturing or information technology; however, Munsters population has continued to grow steadily since then reaching 2,513 residents by 2010 according to recent census data. Todaymunsters economy revolves around retail sales including small business owners who operate their businesses out of their homes or apartments using open space inside or outside malls located throughout central Illinois known as "The Village". Munster, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Munster County. The name comes from Dutch and means " fair city." The first settlers in Munster were farmers who came overland from Holland in 1809. They built log cabins and started a sawmill. In 1814, General David Wilkinson founded the village of Munster on the east fork of the Dearborn River. He named it after his home town in England. The first post office was established in 1817 and moved to its current location in 1826. In 1840, Munster became part of the new Northwest Territory when it was split off from Michigan Territory. In 1848, it became part of what is now Indiana Territory when that territory was created by Congress. In 1861, Illinois tried to secede from Indiana and merged with neighboring Kentucky to form Missouri; this led to another round of US expansions as states were added to make up the Union. On January 1, 1865, Minnesota joined Wisconsin as one of twelve new US states born out of the Civil War; this also led to another round of US expansions as states were added to make up the Union. On December 15, 1870, Minnesota became a state when presidential General Order No 3 was promulgated creating all 68 US states plus Washington D C as an original Dakota territory (the 11 Dakotas had become independent during Reconstruction). Because Minnesota’s admission into the Union would have implied an end to Reconstruction Era policies practiced by southern Democrats in Minnesota – including disenfranchisement of black Americans – PresidentUlysses S Grant vetoed their admission on December 23rd 1870 making sure that all future northern US states would be open-mindedly admitted regardless of race or color Rule Number 2 ever took effect effective January 1st 1971 however since then there has been periodic discussion about whether or notMinnesota should be allowed back into existence due largely to its brewing political power within both major political parties
