Munster is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, with a population of 5,191 as of the 2010 census. The Munster Police Department was founded on October 1, 1851 and currently has seven officers. The town is located in Clay County and is bordered by Hamilton to the east, Union Township to the west and North Vernon to the south. The first permanent settlers in Munster were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1848. They built log cabins near what is now downtown Munster and started trading goods with other settlers in nearby Hamilton Township. By 1860, many residents had moved to Munster because of its fertile land and good water supply for irrigation. In 1865, local merchants offered land at mile post 6 on the I-465 highway for a depot and Post Office; this became known as "Munster" after the town's founders'. The first school was opened in 1870; it was replaced by a one-room schoolhouse in 1903. In 1916, munsters voted to make themselves an incorporated village; this happened despite resistance from some members of their own community who felt that their village would become too small without more than five grocery stores and six businesses. In 1949, then-Mayor John Ahern changed the name of Munster's main street from Main Street (later renamed PID) to Elm Street following countywide efforts to rename all county roads after people or institutions associated with Indiana history or culture (such as George Washington Carver). That same year saw also significant growth when new housing estates were built around downtown Munster – these included White Oaks Estates and Towne Center just north of Main Street between Elm and Jefferson Streets – giving birth not only to what is now known as "the central business district" but also several major commercial districts within easy walking distance of each other across several streets running through downtown: Henderson Road (northwest corner), Elm Street/PID (southwest corner), JeffersonStreet/PID (southwest corner), WhiteOakEstate/TowneCenter (east side), PID/MainStreet ( northeast corner). After experiencing rapid gentrification beginning around 2000–2005 due primarily to increases in job opportunities available outside traditional industries such as manufacturing or service worknearby suburban areas such as Findlay or Marengo—and subsequent loss of jobs along with increased crime ratesin Downtown Munster—munsters opted instead for an aggressive marketing campaign featuring updated graphics highlighting how much better life has become since they abandoned their old ways back during World War II under pressure from neighboring municipalities wanting access to lucrative military bases then being developed at that time including Fort Wayne Naval Shipyard which still occupy most buildings on Old State Road between Henderson Rd./PID & Elm St./PID today plus numerous light industrial properties thereon surrounding Ft Wayne International Airport now home mostly to various retailers — dubbed "Indiana's New Urbanism". This included MUNSTER 2020 Vision 2025 plan which calls for increasing employment within Downtown by 50% over current levels while preserving nearly all public building space characterizing it once again as an attractive place TO LIVE AND WORK."
