Muncie was founded in 1814 by the Potawatomi Indians. The city was named for General Christopher Muncie, who led an American army against the Creek Nation in 1813. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General John Pemberton's Northwestern Indiana Army invaded and destroyed the Confederate stronghold of Terre Haute. munciety became a Union City when the Union took control of Indiana in 1863.
